Can anyone give advice on CE certification? I have tried to do a search to no avail, (comes up with every word with ce in). I have recently purchased a South African boat that is moored in the Med and I must admit I was unaware of this until reading the forum.

Thanks

one useful piece of information is that home-built boats are exempt from the directive but if the boat changes ownership within 5 years it must be certified (which is a totally unrealistic expense). similar rules probably apply to boats built outside the EC.

Do a google search using "CE certification" [Note, you MUST include the inverted commas] and you get 16,900 references containing references to CE certification only. A quick scan one page 1 of the list shows at least 4 references that will answer your question.

The best way to find information on conformity assessment is through
http://www.conformityassessment.org
You can find a few guidelines on the Recreational Craft Directive, RCD, on
http://69.0.147.220/technical-legislation/recreat_craft.asp

A few questions you need to get answered:
1) Does the vessel NEED CE-marking
- has it been traded in the EU before 1998 ? A visit, no matter how long is not enough.
2) Is it YOU that needs to go through the process
- did you import the boat ? The person who puts the boat on the EEA-market, is required to CE-mark the product
3) if it is needed, and if it is you that will be doing it; what CLASSIFICATION are you going for.
-Do you really need A/Offshore or B/Ocean ? You might need it for insurance reasons and resale value.
Either way, as long as the vessel is less than 12m, the conformity assessment is fairly simple, you just need a notified body for the stability testing.
It gets expensive if you want class A or B for a +12m vessel.

Read the chapter on Post Construction Assessment in the RSG Guidelines.
