Looking through the December issue of Yachting Monthly on Page 74 there is a picture of a cat in a life jacket which looks ideal for our cat.

Can anyone identify the exact jacket?

Thanks in advance.

cats lifejackets

hi we've had our two cats living onboard with us for 8 years now, through french canals, south france, italy, now round uk. never had lifejackets! just before we moved on board we introduced them to harnesses, first playing with them then fitting them on. Never had a problem, they took to them straight away, they have the run of the boat & when at sea we clip them on with expanding dog leads. this gives them the freedom to move about in safety, they usually sit out in the cockpit with us at sea. PM me if you want further info good luck

Very fond memories of being owned by a cat.

I've only come across them as crew members twice during my sailing career. Once in the Isle of Man, pussy said to be content in all sea states under the sprayhood. Last year we came across a French boat in Ardglass that had 2 aboard. They both wore a harness with a short lead to keep them inside the cockpit.

A lovely thought but I can't imagine getting them to wear a life jacket will be a walk in the park. Mine would have hissed, enough to say "you ain't going to put me in that". Good luck, hope you find what you're looking for (to the satisfaction of the wearer).

We had a Crewsaver (I think) lifejacket for our cat.
No matter how carefully we put it on or tightened the straps he ALWAYS managed to wriggle himself out of it :(

i do hope that french boat brought the cats into this country via a recognised carrier & not on their own boat!!!!!!!!!!

I love cats, but would never take one on a boat. To my mind it would be cruel and risky to the cat.
I stand to be educated on this but still wouldn't want to inflict it on the cat.

Our cat, sadly now deceased, absolutely loved being on board. He would purr loudly as we arrived at the marina.
One time he was very fidgety en route but calmed down immediately when I waved the boat keys at him and he realised where we were going!

Both of our cats loved the boat. If it got a bit blowy they would go and find smewhere to curl up asnd sleep as cats do. The could regularly be found sitting on the sail cover in harbour looking up the mast and trying to work out how to get up there.
We met one couple who took their cat onboard fr the first time when he was 17 as they had been away round Europe and their daughter met them in Falmouth for the trip back up to Scotland. They didn't want to put him in a cattery at his age. HE just took it in his stride as cats do.

We bought lifejackets for our previous feline pair and they were not interested, wriggled like hell until you got them on and the went all wierd and flat, a bit like a mini Tiger skin rug. We eventually settled on a quick deploy Carp landing net just in case but have never had to get it out in 15 years. The last pair were and the current pair are, very happy on board and love running around the side decks, up and down the flybridge ladder etc.

Hi, We see a lot of Oscar-the cat in YM. His owners boat is based in our marina in Gosport. He seems to be happy with his lifejacket which is really all that matters. He has used one of his nine when he fell in so its now a matter of prudence.

You can pick up a cats lifejacket at any good builders merchants. Just ask for a bag and a few bricks. Apparently they work very well and I suggest all cat owners get one.

Can't believe we've got this far without anyone suggesting cat's need nine lifejackets. Expensive business.

...and a belated merry christmas to all (reluctant) readers

I'm afraid your arithmetic is flawed. You only need to buy a lifejacket after the cat has fallen in eight times :)

Life onboard is not that bad for a cat.

We have two onboard. It's actually easier then a dog as you don't need to walk them.
Ours have been trained not to leave the cockpit during sailing. Only the youngest one has the guts to go on to the deck when in the marina.
As out cats are not allowed outside at home (too risky with traffic) they are perfectly happy on the confined space of the boat as well.
For them it's like a big television screen on the world where they can watch everything from the safety of the boat.

May I ask how you acheived this?

Hitherto I have successfully argued against taking our 15 year old rescue moggy sailing, mainly on account of the mini tonner not really being suitable and naturally we can not take her on other peoples boats, plus at such a great age, it may be unfair to try and teach an old cat new tricks.

However, the new kitten is doubtless young enough to learn and the Centurion, notwithstanding the three and a half hour journey to the marina, is probably a fairly cat friendly boat (once SWMBO has worked out where the hell the litter tray is supposed to go - good luck agreeing that one with your step mother my love). So now I fear I may have to look at the whole issue anew.
