Cars vs boats

SWMBO and I were at Beer Head in the tent for the weekend. Fabulous walks and views thereabouts, much more exciting than I had thought Lyme Bay could provide. Great seeing the Weymouth firework display from 30 miles, and a pink full moon rising over the sea.

I used to drive down that way with my sister twenty years ago, and we always wanted to get to Dartmouth and Salcombe and beyond, but Beer is a village as good as its name. That's Beer Head, in the photo. It was lovely to see Devon Yawls racing in home waters.

Hope you get the tide & time to sort your boat soon.

Yes I like Beer for a visit, not over keen on Salcombe, but I quite like Dartmouth. I suppose Going in that direction Falmouth is favourite with me. Glad you had a nice weekend. At the moment it's looking like Saturday is the earliest I will get to the boat, weather permitting, I do need it to be dry. Er-indoors says I have to make a new back garden gate first! Oh well, that will be another one off the honeydo list!:)

Getting a bit off-thread, here, but...a nice pic of Beer Bay

I'm sinfully proud of my 8 mgpx phone camera; I'm getting boringly obsessive about capturing images of all I see...

...here's Beer beach, for anyone who's only ever hurried past or across Lyme Bay, to the better-known spots, east and west.

Worth stopping for. Great local seafood. Charming little town, too.

Well just to keep the thread a bit boaty, and in case you aren't aware of them, do you know anything about the somewhat unique fishing vessels that worked out of Beer, off the beach?

They had a very peculiar way of tacking the main sail which you can see in the video, it's not easy to do on yer own, when the boat is leaping about, I know, a mate of mine has one. They were usually sailed with a crew of two, and the bigger ones three, so it wasn't so much of a problem, they are still raced from Beer I understand. They are very stout little craft, I suppose they have to be, after all they were dragged up and down Beer beach all the time.

Aaagh! How painfully stupid I've been! It was those little luggers we could see from the clifftop, not a fleet of Devon Yawls...

...very pretty boats, though perhaps when I thought they were racing, their crews were actually fishing? They did seem almost unable to stem the tide, at times...so perhaps they'd simply hove-to.

Thinking back, I can't think how I confused them with Devon Yawls. :(

:D It's why I posted about them, I had a feeling you were confusing them for Devon Yawls. Mind you, Devon Yawls are very nice wee boats too, and they have a strong racing fleet. I don't think the Beer Yawls are used much for fishing these days, but I have seen a couple of motor launches on the beach that are very similar in design.
