It was Commander Richard Farrington, highly proffessional navy officer of the highest integrity, polite, decisive, absolutely committed to all forms of maritime activity in the UK and a bloody good sailor too.

As I understand it, modern warships are actually very fragile compared to say a tanker but very 'compartmentalisable'. Thus the hull is easily breached, presumably on the grounds that a missile will get through anything it hits so better be light and agile and avoid being hit, but damage control systems are everything.

I seem to remember in the last Gulf war, when they feared mines in the Straits of Hormuz, they sent VLCC's through 1st followed by the warships. Warships have thin skins and lots of sailors just the other side of them. Tankers have double skins and no-one within 100's of yards of the waterline.

I hasten to say that this is my perception based on hearsay and could well be nonsense. If so I would be happy to be corrected by someone who knows what they are talking about.

Mr comments where more to do with the waste involved with anything the government does. I realise that sonars etc are very expensive.

Having said that the scantlings and hull plating on a merchant ship are far stronger than on a RN ship. Just look at the hull plating on a frigate / destroyer, you can see where the plates are bent around the ribs and beams. Merchant ships have to comply with lots of regs that just dont apply to the RN or RFA. The RFA have a dispensation to use single hulled tanker for another 10 years(ish).

All my own thoughts are quite happy to be proved wrong

odd comments have emerged in the reports, such as 'we are an equal opportunity employer' but also 'no racial or sexual abuse is involved'. seems to imply that some other form of discrimination is involved.

these press reports always leave you wondering what the hell really is going on.

Re: Even in times gone by

"Bullying is in the eye of the beholder" is it not? Drill sargeants were leaders but to the untrained eye they were bullies were they not?

Yes, the evening TV broadcast said something about "equal opportunities investigation" or words to that effect. So take your pick from female / black / homosexual / disabled junior officer??? The speed with which the captain was removed (and the fact that the complainant wasnt reported as removed, with the risk of appearing to have jumped to conclusions) suggests there is some political sensitivity involved.

We shall see

Re: I don\'t know,

Surely its the beholders reaction, to what they think, that decides whether or not they are being bullied/ Is it not? therefore it matters what they behold. What ever level you set it at is irrellivant.

Re: I don\'t know,

Sorry, I took your beholder to be on the sidelines. The problem will always haunt the services who want robust and testing training conditions to weed out the unsuitable. It appears that every now and then someone is going to take offence or someone in power is going to go over the top. Either way it gets in the news and becomes an issue.

It's like a lot of stuff. Lots of people go through the system with no worries and no mention in the media. A couple of incidents and the system gets condemed.

I have no idea whatthe answer is.

Couldn't have been a ship's captain. Must have been Royal Marines.
