Was last week end too windy for Yachts to see where they are going ?

I was involved with a near miss with a cruiser and a collision by a dinghy ( both on my Port side ) /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I got close enough to both of the skippers to see their faces and both looked petrified.

It wasnt that windy but there was some spray, does the salt get in your eyes and blind you or were these just inexperienced ?

Im not really mad , we can all make mistakes, I want to understand what is going on and what to look out for in the future, these two must have been inexperienced .
Perhaps licences should be required before sails can be used in a force 4 and above .

What I'd say is that we can all make mistakes and the weather can be very tricky sometimes, i remember coming back across the sea in Med pelting rain from sudden storm and visibility was very low and i could barely see...

If it were me and i could see and could tell the others were having difficulty i would have adjusted my course to avoid them and allow more than enough room for any mistakes on their part or mine...

not a personal dig but i would make sure i wasnt close enough to see their faces in the first place, but then again i wasnt in the situation so can only comment on what you just said /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Were you in a motor boat or a sailing boat? And were they sailing boats or motor boats? What was the relevance of them being on your port side?

At first glance they looked as if they were sailing but in retrospect I think the first one was just been blown along by the wind, I was having a beer at the time and didnt really notice him until it was too late and the collision was inevitable.

Second one was in control and tacked into my port side, he would have hit had I not seen him and taken emergency avoiding action, thankfully I wasnt on Auto pilot and I didnt have a beer in my hand !

I always get suckered by these con artists!

Problem is I've seen such amazing stupidity on the water that it doesn't seem out of the question at all.

On the assumption that this is a wind up, well done, you got me.
If not.........

I always have a smile on my face when posting but these were both real incidents, only joking about license required before taking a lethal weapon out in 20 knts of wind !

Simon
Of course I had 600 hp of Stink making machinery at my finger tips and yes they were under sail and no visible power on, that doesn't give them the right to ram my port side !

Not a con artist just trying to make a point

a) sail doesn't have the right if way over power, sail is usually the stand on vessel

This basic principal was lost with the two clowns, one of which tacked into me at the last minute 'in a narrow channel'.

b) I wanted to know if any one knew the term and relevance of a narrow Chanel (yellow markings are swinging boats) ?

c) can you see where you are going in spray ?

Just asking as the facts were completely unclear from your post. The fact they were on your port side should be irrelevant as far as I can see. Did they both make a last minute change of course turning straight into you?

Oh dear lord he's not joking.

Hate to the bearer of bad news old bean, but their being under sail does kinda mean you're obliged to keep out of their way.
Unless they tacked within an unreasonably short time of an incident (say 10 seconds...?) then you really do have do something about them.
Inconvenient perhaps, but such is life I'm afraid.

Had a very similar thing on Saturday! It was pretty choppy/blowy in the afternoon so lots of spray around.
I had made a clear and obvious course change to go behind a sail boat, who then decided to change direction when I was more or less behind him. I had to make a major course change to avoid him on his new heading!! His two crew looked quite concerned to say the least! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
Coming back in past the moorings at Burnham, a racing yacht of some kind turned from between the bouys into our path.
We were already giving way to a yatch and a thames barge thingy, didn't have any where else to go! Already at tickover so had me reaching for the gears!!! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
I know Mobo's are supposed to give way to sail, that's fair enough but sometimes.......... /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
