Daka was on a windup from the start - but with all good windups it comes from actual experiences ...

I've probably got this in the wrong order - but - 1 was a close quarters incident (did he actually hit?!) where he was tied up along side a pontoon - ie moored ... now, unless the pontoon wasn't actually fixed (like I've found in some of the french canal locks!) then he was tied up and therefore not underway nor making way ... so in no way can he give way ... so the bugger that didn't either didn't see him or really was that thick the mind boggles...

No 2 is probably a little more common, where a saily boat tacks without first seeing if he is going to be tacking into a collision making situation ... most likely didn't see Daka sneaking along there with his smokeless, wakeless stealth boat ... but I believe caused Daka to take abrubt avoiding action .... now - if that was in a narrow channel then perhaps Daka should've been able to appreciate that the sail boat did need to tack as he was running out of water ... I don't know ... that is the grey area that confuses a lot of lesser mobo drivers and annoys the saily skippers as it is bleedin obvious to them ....

eitherway, you cannot EVER categorically state that a mobo gives way to sail - you might as well introduce the italian proposed amendment to the colregs that all leisure boats will give way to commercial boats ... even smaller vessels that qualify as commercial because they have a paid skipper or instructor onboard ... ludicrous!

Thank you Fireball, your overall assessment is reasonably accurate with a few minor hick ups (that is acceptable as the post is long and full of trollish behaviour).

Collision one did indeed happen.

I was berthed with engines off along side a pontoon exactly where the berthing master had put me.

I was having a beer when I saw the sail approach.

He was then stuck to my port side as the wind held him there.
I helped him off by pushing his sail away.

I DIDNT GET ANY APOLOGY.

Incident 2

I was not drinking, I was in a narrow channel at 5 knots.

A small cruiser under sail came from between trots ( yellow boats on my plan).

I would have passed a stern of him.

BUT after several mins he tacked into me.

The red dots show the channel markers, he had tacked less than half way across the channel.

I thought he had done it for the hell of it but Flaming explained to me that he was probably trying to work the tide currents.

I was happy and went away, then some posters wouldnt let it go.

I learnt from this post that in future I also have to account for Yachts working the current and that they may not have seen me.

I also learnt that either scuttleberts is full of trolls or there is a large percentage of skippers that are clueless of the collision regs and choose only to focus on

power boats give way to sail regardless of the situation ........dummies no wounder yachts keep disappearing without trace !

Re: Proof of Narrow Channel for Fireball

Especially for Fireball, sorry its late

Here is a photo of Incident 2, as far as I am able to ascertain this is taken from the exact spot although this boat is chopping the corner on the Port side of the channel and I was about 5 yards over on the extreme Starboard side, you can see the swingers marked as yellow on my plan, the cruiser sailed from between these swingers.

Yes thanks, you can also see how the current whips through and understand why the yacht would want to work the tide /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Re: Proof of Narrow Channel for Fireball

Actually - there can be very noticeable current through there and a saily boat may want to work the tide ...
we only generally race up as far as the Walsh racing mark - although have been to the Church mark once...
