Can anyone on Earth update the SW of a Raymarine bit officially not supported anymore

In case anyone comes across this thread and has the s/w update for an S1 pilot I’d really appreciate it. All these success stories with other models are beginning to get to me.

Used a 2 euro "thingamajig" to access PC Serial Cable pins:

(No laughing at my cabling, please)
no laughing, well done, only thing I'd do differently is have shorter bare wire ends as like it is in the pic, it would be v.easy to twist the adapter and short black and green. (99% nothing would happen as it's rs232 or something signals but for sure update wouldn't work :) )

Coming from an IT background I'm sure you know it, just a warning the hordes of forumers embarking into the lovely world of s/w upgrades

PS. interesting embroidery looks more TR than GR :)

To be honest, I don't know the actual details! The instructions for the previous update did mention a few SW "fixes".

However:
- Coming from IT background, I always upgrade everything (after some time of update rollout).
- Will allow any future purchases of random Ebay peripheral attachment to operate (joystick, compasses, etc)
- Gives us another challenge for the long winter nights (excitement if you "brick" the pilot and a sense of achievement if not)!
I understand your comment about upgrades and you say that you come from an IT background.
But if you don't know the actual programmers, I'm not sure I would be confident about an unknown software upgrade.
Usually programmers introduce new features and create new bugs at the same time.
Not FIXING something that isn't BROKEN comes to mind.
Thats what I have done on my Raymarine G Series navigators.
I once upgraded it to an early version of their Lighthouse (I think) software.
Lots of things didn't then work - Raymarine then suggested a complete reset of all the external kit.
I "bottled out" and just downgraded to the earlier (non Lighthouse) version which WORKS
And that is how it is staying.

That said, I am a bit of a "sucker for punishment".
I run Linux Manjaro as my main desktop PC operating system.
Manjaro is a "bleeding edge" technology so I am at risk of FIXING my PC that isn't BROKEN!!!
Kind of "do what I say" and not "do as I do".
That said, most of the time it is fine and I take snapshots before upgrading so going back a version is possible.

Bingo. That's the main reason why I didn't do the upgrade myself (yet).
With my 400G course computer, the boat runs straight as an arrow, responds promptly but smoothly to any a/p adjustment, and copies the plotter route just perfectly, when on track mode.
I really can't think of anything that could be improved, so why bother?

All that said, the original reason why I looked for (and eventually found) the upgrade SW package is that I had in mind to connect a Joystick which I found in the US as new old stock, and I just couldn't resist buying.
But as I found out after connecting it and noticing that it wasn't recognized, it does require the course computer update.
This is in fact the one and only added functionality specifically mentioned in Raymarine documentation, and I have no idea if there are others.
Though as I said, I can't for the life of me think of what else to ask to an a/p, compared to what it already does now.

Now, it's good to hear that the files were useful for other folks, and that the upgrade process works as it should.
This summer, during one of our very few rainy days, I might as well tackle the upgrade and see if it fixes the unrecognized joystick.
But FWIW, in the meantime I also replaced the original ST6001 head unit with the ST8001.
Which among other features, allows rudder control with the rotary knob, which is almost as convenient as the joystick.
So, that gave me another reason, on top of the one in the very first line, to do nothing at all... :)

True about the wire ends.

Well spotted for the embroidery - in our house we have both nationalities! :p

Both of you are, in essence, totally right. As mentioned before - I also enjoy a good challenge (after practically rebuilding half my boat!). :)

As far as the particular pilot goes, this is a recent purchase, so before installation, I thought to upgrade, reset and start fresh.

SO since updating the firmware, my compass has lost 10 degrees west. meh...guess it hasnt fixed my drift. In any case, once i get back out on the water i'll recalibrate for a final answer but right now i need to try and extract a siezed trim pin from a dp290 with zero access, and i'll be damned if im removing two engines to remove the transom shield,....but thats another thread....

You can find an explanation of what Raymarine sent me in my post #34.
But don't ask me to guarantee anything about that - let alone if it can work for you!
That said, no problems from my part to forward the files to anyone interested to play a bit of Russian roulette with their course computers...

Hey Mapis,

Any chance I could still grab those files from you? I went to reach out via PM but I just get an error and am unable to send you one, possibly because I only just signed up for the forum in an attempt to acquire these files 😅

My email is jacobzieleniewski@gmail.com if you're still able to send those files. Thanks a ton!

Yes, I guess you can't send PM for a while after subscribing, but don't ask me what the exact rule is.
Anyway, you should already see in your mailbox a WeTransfer link for downloading (within 3 days, because it's a temporary storage that is deleted automatically) all the files I got from Raymarine.
Mind, user friendliness and a safe process control were clearly not a priority for whoever made this stuff.
So, even the smallest mistake can actually brick your a/p controller...
You've been warned, don't ask me to send you a replacement if that happens!

I didn't do the upgrade myself
...
Just for the records, in the meantime I did the upgrade and installed the joystick, which was immediately seen by the a/p with the new firmware and is now working well enough to make me consider getting rid of the wheel. So, all well and good.

BUT, as per my previous post, the process is tricky and not error-proof by any stretch of imagination.
So, I wouldn't recommend anyone to do the upgrade just for the sake of it.
In fact, if it weren't for interfacing the joystick, pretty sure I wouldn't have even considered fixing something that wasn't broke, as Hurricane said!
