I’m lucky in that my boat’s gas locker will happily accept 7kg bottles so I’ve just tried to exchange 2 x empty 4.5kg butane for 2 x 7kg butane (expecting to pay refill price for the 7kg) at a Texaco service station but the staff member was adamant that she could only exchange like for like as they have 3 x 4.5kg in stock. I think she’s wrong (Calor Gas group the 4.5 and the 7 together on their website) but if anyone in the Falmouth area wants the 4.5 bottles, the Texaco petrol station at Treluswell has some so please go and buy them so that I can exchange for 7kg bottles before I head away!

Anyone else found out whether their local marina or stockist has changed to Flogas from Calor - as per pessimist's post about Darthaven Marina ? It's all very well having a local supply but if we should ever go cruising ..... ????

They have stockists and depots all over the country and can deliver so worst case it's a taxi ride. They also have agreements with various other brands to swap cylinders between them. That compares favourably to my experience with Calor for the last few years where every cage in the country was full of empties and no hope of a refill and no access to depots to refill.

Called in at Darthaven Marina yesterday and it seems they've switched from Calor to Flogas. According to the chap in the berthing office they propose to stock 4.5 and 7 butane and the equivalent propane. Their cage seemed well stocked yesterday. They also seemed to have some 907s which is somewhat strange.
As our boat has a locker that can only hold 907s I am gratified that we can exchange our empties at Darthaven when down that way. Last year we had to buy an electric kettle and small hob and berth only in marinas due to the camping gaz crisis

The same as you have to do on the east coast of the States when taking your bottles in a taxi or on the bus out to the gas filling stations. Trying to look nonchalant walking to the bus with a full, 10 gall, steel gas cylinder in a sail bag over your shoulder.

I filled a 20Lt tin of diesel and put a supermarket bag over the top of the jerry can then dropped it into another one and managed to 'casually' stride on to a bus and get a lift back to where i had left the boat.

Taxis and buses wont carry fuel or gas, but as the bus driver had told me earlier in the day we dont search passengers bags....

There have been some serious discussions behind the scenes by a number of parties which has lead to this delay and those discussions are still ongoing.

As has been said above in the thread when bottles are 'needing' refurb they will be scrapped, so we have a brief reprieve which will hopefully allow people to refill bottles and buy them some time to consider other options or buy us some time to encourage another supplier to move into the ready made market

I am amused that Calor say that "we underestimated the impact this would have on specific user groups". Well they cannot have been totally ignorant of the effect as plenty of users as well as organisations have been telling them for the last 3 years. What they really mean is that they thought that they could get away with ignoring the impact and expected users of the discontinued sized to meekly switch to other products from their range.

So do I trust them? Not b****y likely.
