I hesitate to add to the 'Med-threads' as there have been a few, but I would like to find out a little more about the berthing experience in Marina Cala d'Or. Reading previous threads I have learnt that many of you like to visit the place, but what is it like as a year-round home port? I would be very grateful for any feedback from anyone who is, or has previously been based there. I have picked up that its a little tight for room, but my boat is far from enormous so perhaps only an issue later if I decide to go 'bigger'. I will be going out to have a look around in October at options both on Mallorca and on mainland Spain. Thanks.

Not tight for room not sure where that came from. We are 21m. Max prob 25 26 ish

The pros.

It has calas within a short distance
As ports go it is picturesque
Lots of resteraunts
Lots of support services
You can park at the back of your boat
Sheltered

Cons.


It is expensive.
It is an hour from the airport which is e70 or a hire car
From November to March is is closed. Really closed
People walk past the back of your boat all the time. Pointing , takin pictures and staring !
The yacht club is private. You can drink and eat but not swim

Yep to all that. We swam in the yacht club though - their pool policy seems inconsistent
There really are loads of nice calas close by
It's not too tight on space. It's fine for 80 feet, and bigger boats come in occasionally
The shore power is truly crummy. If you want 30 amps then fine. 60 is a struggle, and 80amps is no way
The street water is salty and the harbour water is brown due to silt coming down a river
But on balance I'd rate it as very good, even with those downsides
 
We have a English car at the airport in Palma and use the park and fly. Straight out off departures on to a mini bus car waiting, in car within 15 mins.. Works well for us. We're in the north of the island. So motorway to manacor.

Jfm is right. The water is dreadful (salty ). We get 44 odd amps out of a 32a socket so we survive !

works well for us its about 500euro to park a car at the airport for a year. they wash and inspect the car for you, charge battery and have it waiting for you when you arrive. its nice to have your own car, to nosey round the island when not sailing and those big grocery / beer shops.
 
Going through the motions of costing up a move there full time post our little jaunt there a month or so ago. There seems to be some excellent support there from a boat perspective and the locals seem friendly (esp. the forumites!)
 
Hi I spent a couple of years there and managed to get a good deal on a berth by renting from an owner.
I would say all the things already said nothing happening in the autumn or spring come to that, just summer.
We moved to mainland and ended up in Denia as very cheap compared to the islands and just a few hours to cross in the summer.
We saved 8000 Euros a year which can cover loads of expenses and the resort is open most of the year and is easy to get to all year from Alicante.

Thanks again for the pointers. We are looking forward to having a look around over the coming weeks. We hope to use the boat for as long a season as possible so finding somewhere which is still relatively lively at each end of the season does figure on our wish list.

how far is Denian from the airport, i am looking at SCM but the 1 1/2 journey is putting me off!.

good points etc of this marina?

The marina is filling up very rapidly and there are now only 15 berths vacant (of various sizes) for next season.
The Boats UK boys are now there in force and already taking up berths so the vacancies will not last long.

Weather wise it is probably the safest marina in the Med due to it's inland position.

We hope to be on the boat early in Oct (Acuarela berth N7) so if you are there please give us a call and we can give you the full run down about the marina.

Thanks Doug, thats very kind. We can't get out until around 16th October due to SWMBO booking us into somewhere in Santorini in order that she can (hopefully) take her coat off for the first time in months!!
If you are there I will definitely give you a shout.

Just an update.... after my recent fact finding tour of marinas, the time has come to commit to the idea of boating in the Mediterranean and put money where mouth is.... so today we have signed up for a spot in Cal d'Or.
Thanks to all of you who have offered advice and encouragement. All I need to do now is get the boat down there ready for next season.
Are Peters & May the experts for shipping by sea or are there reliable alternatives that I should also be asking for a price?
I have to admit to being quite excited by this new adventure..

I'd get indications from 7star and PSP as well.

I found PSP the most honest and straightforward. I really don't trust 7star further than I can throw them - indeed I pretty much hate them. But needs must and if you do find yourself using them insist on your boat being put on a single cradle not a load of old chocks (which they will big up and tell you are "Very Special Chocks")

P+M do generally a better job than 7star imho. Proper cradles and a surveyor to watch the shipping people

P+M and 7 Star will promise you there is a ship round the corner, take your money, then tell you oops there isn't a ship after all, sorry. I now refuse to pay till I see the ship steaming up Southampton water on AIS - 7Star agreed this term in our deal. PSP seem much more trustworthy to me and also agreed this term

My preference is therefore PSP then P+M then 7star but it might be a case of needs must
 
I would check out road transport as well. You may be too high, but if you can go by road it will be half the price, and it would be an easy cruise from a suitable drop-off point on the mainland.
 
100% agree with JFM re 7 Star, wouldn't trust them at all - had a pretty shocking conversation with them at LBS in Jan when they tried to put the fear of God into me about using anyone but them. Total bollox and very poor form IMHO. In the end and on principle I used PSP to ship down my Sq65 and they did a truly excellent job, communicated almost daily in the run up to loading (the exact date of which is never precise due to the ship often coming from elsewhere) and were over 20% cheaper than 7 Star. I know plenty of people on here have had good experiences with 7 Star but I have to say I now have a very, very dim view of them.
