Is there anyone who has experience of using a solid fule cabin heater and can offer advice?

I have a PA charcoal heater (1965), which persists in suffering from such a strong downdraft that it is ofetn impossible to light. I've even had one fire start burning upside down?

Also, I'm considering buying a new solid fule cabin heater and would like to here from anyone who can recommend a make.

Your problem may be in the "Charlie Noble", or structure at the top of the chimney. The "H" pattern is probably the most effective at keeping out rain and yet allowing a good draw on the chimney. It is unlikely that you would need to change your heater.

I completely agree with that. We have a Shipmate (no longer made!) with an H shaped head. No problems. It helps if the flue is roughly somewhere near the mast; this avoids air downwashing off the mainsail on one tack.

Best flue material is stainless steel, not copper. You need a damper in the flue.

When the Shipmate rusts out (it has done 18 years!) I intend to fit one of these:

I could witter on a lot more, about fitting a stainless lined coal bin near the stove, etc etc, but will spare you the gory details!
