How the hell do I get one of these "certificate of competence"? I don't live in the UK, (UK citizen) only come there very rarely and after my brother sets off sailing, even less! I have no RYA stuff, have been sailing/motoring for 30 years, Logged 1000 miles last year and so far this year, 800 all over UK, Europe and now the med! I do have a boatmans licence, issued by the Salcombe harbour master, which I had to take a verbal and pratical exam for with the Dartmouth harbour master, (He's a right stickler, 1 hour on the collision regulations alone!) this was to allow me to charter the boat with 12 persons, out of Dartmouth. Would this be enough to send to the RYA, to prove competence? never needed one, but "the times they are a'changin'" Any info would be appreciated, thanks.

I am not sure I have a good answer for you except that there are RYA Recognised Teaching Establishments in the Med; there is one in Gibraltar for example. Contact the Training Department on 023 8062 7400

Are they really worth it. I've had one for years, never been asked to produce it or show it to anyone. There are those that will say yes, but lets face it experience counts for a whole lot more than pieces of paper.

OK, to hell with it. Unbolt it and we'll use it as an anchor!

You might not have been anywhere that insists on it, but my experience of the French suggests otherwise. You don't always have to show it, but if you can't when ask they are quite likely to impound your boat until you can produce one. I hear the Germans are much the same, but have no personal experience.

I think that aswell, however I want to go up the river rhone, wine stocking and food cruise, next year to Lyon, so I will also need a CEVNI thing aswell, maybe, I wasn't asked for anything last time I did it, however, just in case I'd better get one.

When I got mine all I needed was the signature of someone claiming to be a commador of a sailing club. I might add I've now got the full suite of RYA certs via BOSS on the hamble so I'm legal.
