I've not posted on here for some time, and this post is only to say "Cheerio" as a boat owner.

We have sold our S48 having lost our boating "mojo" following my wife's accident last year(went overboard knocking herself out in the process). It was not a nice moment, and frankly since that incident, and being in our late sixties, we were simply not enjoying it as much - the enthusiasm had left us. Based on that, we could no longer justify the cost.

It's very much the end of an era for us, but we are glad we finally made the right decision. Me? I am going to buy a share in an (smallish) aeroplane, and we have bought a caravan to tour Europe - (a large twin axle kept in a purpose built secure "gold" storage facility that costs £400 per annum - beat that MDL/Premiere!!). I promise not to hold you up on the motorway, and if you want your drive tarmaccing, I've always got a bit left over from a local job!!

So, I'll certainly be lurking on here, and it only remains for me to say have a safe and brilliant season on the water.

Cheers everyone

Nicho

Great to hear from you ... sad to hear you are moving on but I'm sure you have great memories.

Only suggestion --- suggest not banking too hard and throwing SWMBO overboard at 10,000 feet.... endless paperwork in the aviation world!

Well Hi and Bye Nicho.

I heard the boat was moved to Chichester whilst 'for sale' and delighted you got a deal together - I was a bit surprised to see 2 x S48's for sale at the same time, I think thats quite rare is'nt it. Fab boat IMHO too.

So sorry you are out of boating now but fully understand the position as your Swmbo was quite shaken last year and not without due reason. Good luck with the future touring plans and drop by sometime if passing the Hamble

Well Nicho,

Given you have done so much boating, a change of camping style makes sense. Glad to here you sold up and are able to move on. Just remember you do not need a boat to Join in!

keep in touch with your travels and if you ever find yourself on the Costa Del Sol with the Caravan and need a Sailing fix...call in!

I still think the S42/43 is the best value in class and you owned one and her big sister....

Paul

I fully understand the situation with your wife - if the same thing had happened to us, I would expect the boat to be up for sale. After 4 weekends of not being able to use the boat due to the weather, a caravan sounds quite a good idea.

Good luck and if you are ever in Chichester please drop in for a coffee - Berth T8

Have fun with the touring, It's something I'd like to do one day although would have thought you'd done enough of that given your old job.

If you ever fancy a boating 'fix' your both always welcome to join us.

Hope to see you around.

Kevin.

Hi Nicho,

When I clicked on this topic I immediately recognised the pic in your avatar to be the same as that posted on "Swift Talk" :)

After years of sailing we couldn't decide whether to completely give up or to move to the convenience of a smaller motorboat for day use. As well as this we have also had a caravan for many years and so decided to keep the boat about an hour and a half from home and then use the boat while we holiday in the caravan. It's worked out well so far. The boat is small enough to not require huge maintenance bills and we just use her as and when we can while mixing it with our other hobby. I must say that the caravan has so far been used a lot more, the weather hasn't been great this year, the positive is that there isn't a huge pressure to use the boat as berthing & maintenance costs are now relatively low.

I hope you enjoy caravanning.

Best wishes
Ian

Hi Mike, nice of you to let us know your off to ventures new, as for that caravan why dont you tow it with a manta 400 or something like that, then you will never get in anyones way! Even Jeremy Clarkson would not complain, all the very best.

Oops Ian, hope I haven't said anything bad about you over there!! I get a bit crochety with some of them on Swift Talk. Some do nothing but whinge!! Still, it's good fun, and most of them hate me now!!

Cheers,

Mike

PS Having been boating for "thousands" of years and never bending one boat, it took me just four weeks to put a ding in the brand new van!! Take a look on the photos section on Swift Talk!

So long as you keep active & enjoy life, thats what counts. We have decided to keep our Absolute 41 until we have had enough, I was wondering when that might be only the other day, answered my own question with "Anytime after 60 but maybe not till 80, life will no doubt dictate.
Life is what happens to you whilst you are making other plans, have fun, we have some good van accommodation in Burnham on crouch :D

The Absolute 41 is a beautiful boat - hang on to her as long as you can. Having had a cancer scare three years ago (prostate - caught very early and dealt with!), we really do make the most of our lives. It's a bit scary to think that in 27 months time I will be 70!! We have had the caravan new since April 5th, and so far have had a week in Yorkshire, a week in the New Forest, and 3 weeks in France. We're shortly off to Cornwall for three weeks, then another 10 days in York, a week in The Lakes, and a week in the Peak District. That takes us through to the middle of September............

Best thing is, it's as cheap as chips!! (compared to boating anyway). Then, I've got to find time to keep my flying hours up!

Seriously, thank you all for the best wishes - we've had a lot of ribbing from our motorsport friends about being "weekend gypsies", selling lucky heather etc but it's really good fun, though some caravanners are a bit scary.......men with pony tails and crocs, women who flatly refuse to take off their plastic rain hats covering their blue rinse perms, even in 28 degrees...real scary stuff!

All the very best to you and your good lady wife. Let us know what 'small aeroplane' you are buying. I have a PPL and would love to hear how you get on.

I am sure there are many people on here who could give you a boating fix every now and then. Hopefully in the not to distant future I may be one of them.

Once again all the best to you:)

Hi Titanic. Looking at a Piper Warrior/Archer. I currently rent both at Coventry Airport, but looking at a share with two or three others in something similar. Not a Cessna man myself! There are some really cheap shares around at the moment, but it's finding the "right" group of people to share with that's important.
