Burton Waters Boat Sales

I am sure he said you get the whole £1000 back. Was the £250 deduction because you perhaps had the trial on the Trent ?

Dennis

No .
The surveyors trial was on the Fossdyke.
I did not withdraw from the deal so there was no deduction.
.
The general idea is you carry on with the purchase even if the surveyor finds faults . I did that .
My surveyor found multiple faults that were not apparent from the initial viewing , one of which was very significant, so I put in a revised offer which after a modest haggle was accepted. The deduction covered the cost of repairing the defects . Some slight risk element on my part but the main defect was costed by obtaining a written quotation from BW who then proceeded with the repair after I bought the boat.
You should bear in mind there is rarely a fault free boat and defects not described to you and not clearly apparent from a viewing but found at survey can be used to adjust the offer price. You will be in a strong position at this point providing the sum you are deducting can be substantiated.

What you can't really do is deduct for cosmetic wear and tear after the survey. So you should be happy with things like the condition of the upholstery and canvas canopy for example, before you make your initial offer.

This I don't get.

I can say hand on heart that my boat has zero faults (I wouldn't be using her weekly otherwise). Maybe i'm lucky in that I operate on fresh water and use her weekly so less likely for faults to occur. Infact, the only preventative thing I need to consider are:
1) I have a squeeky belt and people have mentioned it may be the tensioner rather than the belt. I have 2 tensioners on order (easy to replace)
2) The original pre-filers are washable elements (metal casing) - I don't like this and plan to replace with Racor clear bowl filters for next season. There'll be a bit of tinkering to do as I have stainless fuel pipe so i'll get a fitter to make a new pipe from the tank to the filter (supply) (I doubt the new Racor's will be a direct match fitting wise)

But if I was selling a boat, again I would make sure that there were ZERO faults.

Maybe i'm OCD? Maybe i'm lucky? Maybe other owners are more careless?

Or maybe ( as in my case ) some owners have limited / zero engineering knowledge and are just not aware of a fault.

There you are - you just noted a fault - squeaky belt !
I think mine is free of fault is at the moment if we are not counting the broken hinge on the locker that I keep forgetting about. Now I have said that another fault is bound to occurred . My last boat developed faults a soon as it went to the sales pontoon !

Don't think a squeaky belt would be worthy of a price reduction though :D

I bought my current boat from Burton Water last September/October last year. The boat was immaculately presented for a 2003 build and I went over it to the best of my ability and negotiated a price. After a through survey, many issues were found, some serious (missing fire extinguishers from new in the engine bay) and some not so serious. All the serious issues were sorted out, including replacing the exhaust hoses, which entailed moving/removing the fuel tanks. Just mainly small cosmetic issues and items left for me to address, which I have completed the majority.

I dealt with Matt at Ipswich and he was both professional and courteous, including when we overheated on the first sea trial and then ran out of diesel on the second sea trial and I was not the happiest person on the planet!!

I would happily buy from Burton Waters again.
