Hi Wayne,

This is a pic of the cover with flaps and shows what I was trying to explain. Sorry about all the fuss, but I think you'll be fine because the towing vehicle will cover most of the trailers front.
My trailer is 6 feet wide and cover is 6 feet high, and the wind pressure is amazing.

Anyway, lets get back to boats, I like your project :-)

Now i get you, Dennis (Bigplumbs) says i have skills, in some ways maybe but not understanding folk lol

Mechanism i was thinking on the locking mechanism, well a wrap around front panel to go 4inch down the side ;)

I was gong to make a full slip over canopy but then changed it incase i needed side access.

Well i get you know ;)

And yes back to the boat, off to see whats wrong with the sewing machine in a minute as its got bad low needle tension for some reason.

Hi Wayne. Awesome stuff as ever. And watch your weight :D.

Quick point: even if the roof part of the top gun is quite taut between a flat hard top above your steering wheel and the flat topped ss tube goalpost at the back, it will still sag in the rain. Looking at the above pic it could collect a few hundred kg of rain. You need to design that problem out I think. :encouragement:

Hi matey

I was been keeping myself aware f that. I altered it last week when i was setting it all up properly. Along with moving the rear mount further back for easier access i brought the goal post top further forward and lowered it more. It is now 3 inch /75mm lower than the hardtop edge which is just over 100cm away. I know it does not look like it in the picture.

I was thinking ths was enough for the run off ?

And how do you know i have put weight on, not much mind you, and its been xmas :):) Call it ballast :)

Re: The plant pot

Its been a naff week or so here on and off the boat. Myself had serious toothache and had it ripped out and still suffering a week after. Off a few days last week with it and as it was nice annoyed me as i couldnt concentrate to do work on the boat. Feel a bit better today and back to work this morning :(

What has been done over the last few weeks, well got the engine fitted and working, but i bought remote to short by a foot so waste of £40 , what a plonker, the steering cable is good as i had to soak it in air tool oil to loosen it up. well fine again.

when i could was a cock up with the canopy patterns. I first used thick 800grm polythene sheet for the pattern material, as seen on the trailer, for that a it was ok but on the boat, not so good as to stiff so i got some 350grm, good thickness but it stretches to much easily.

20190221-130806.jpg

So i have ordered some proper pattern material, Fibretex and all the Lift The Dot fittings. Well think i have . Also some more basting tape as near ran out faffing with it. What else, oh yes and i think i will be getting more zips to remove all the sides so then i can have just the top section inplace if we want.

Still on the canopy i mentioned that the rear section i wanted to be fixed to a vertical surface, and if you look back it was at around 45 deg. Now it is 90 deg after i laminated inplace the sections i made a few week back.

20190223-151209.jpg

Filled the ends with a filler i made from chopped up CSM and poly resin. Just mix the resin as normal and then add the CSM cuttings and mix in, it will show how fast the binder breaks down.

20190223-151105.jpg

20190223-154343.jpg

So just slap it in the hole let set then sand back. In above pic you can see i filled it with expanding foam to get a back to fill to.

20190224-153046.jpg

20190224-153054.jpg

Now for now that is that untill the Fibretex arrives, tomorrow i hope form what they charge for postage., dam shocking.

One job i just could not decide on was what to do with he hatch opening. This weekend i decided to just try this idea instead of trimming it with hardwood.

One thing i did wrong is forget to wet the inside of the tunnels that i made from polythene and masking tape to help it set, not easy though if i did to get water to stay on polythene. But it worked out just about as in the end i cut a few slashes in the polythene to let air get in.

I need to trim it more as just did it tonight when i got home to see if it had all set. few large air pockets but no problem, this is with filling to much and not dampening the `mould`

20190224-130949.jpg

Filled with expanding foam.

not to much as you can see i got carried away.

20190224-132329.jpg

20190224-133355.jpg

Trimmed back a little, need to do a lot more as the hatch bolt need access points and then laminating up.

20190225-172925.jpg

So plan is to get the canopy made and get the boat sanded :( and painted is the priority along with fitting the linings and upholstery.

If all that is done with a few other little bits like outboard mount and this and that it will be launched May 18th..............dont hold your breath.

Re: The plant pot

Hey Wayne, good to see you're still going strong. Making progress, but so often, when you're doing so many different jobs at the same time, it's hard. Every time a job gets ticked off the list, a new one pops up!

I'm not sure where you're going with your foam trim on the hatch, but when I was relining the cabin on my boat, I had lots of very rough and uneven fibreglass to dress off first. I got around that by dressing off the inner lip on the opening by using sections of pipe insulation. Its so easy to work with, cut and trim and sticks like crazy using contact adhesive. Just a little spray on both surfaces, let it get tacky and you're good to go. Site won't allow me to upload a pic but you'll find some on my old resto posts.

And speaking of posts, I don't know if you're up to date with my latest adventures in my "Snowball effect" posts. It never ends!!

Best of luck and fingers crossed for your launch date!

Re: The plant pot

Hi matey

When it comes to boats as you know there are always little jobs here and there to be done. In my case a lot more either half done or not touched. I am doing just the jobs i need to so it can be launched asap. Its more finance and health that is going to hold it back that bit, just waiting for a date for my elbow operation. Still if i launch it before the operation i can spend some of the three or four weeks of work chilling on the boat :) got it sussed ;);)

The job on the hatch opening is to line it out on the inside. i want to make it look well so i can line it properly once laminated over. No biggie really just want it looking well and not getting any condensation on it.

I dont often get on forums much now but i will take a look at your thread later ;)

Re: The plant pot

Hi all, hope you all enjoying your boating, me, well still faffing about here :)

I was a little peeed off a few week back as i tried a new supplier for some pattern material and fittings which took six days to get here and still waitng for a few parts to arrive after paying over the norm for delivery. I will not be using Snuggtopz again as they are complete useless and unprofessional.

So in the mean time i have got on with the internal vanishing and lining out. I used a hi temp spray adhesive as we dont want it falling off or coming loose on the real hot summer we get a lot of in the UK......a little sarcy there lol.

I did mess up a little on the varnishing as the front panel where the sockets are i ended up with a few runs. I used a foam roller and flatted out with foam brush. I think i was just rushing, No big deal a quick sand otu of the runs and another quick coat will do the job. All the rest is good :)

Looking better now.

All was varnished with Len Tonkinois. Solid wood three coats and veneered was two coats.

20190309-152055.jpg

Used this adhesive

Next up is to finish the hatch surround and then i can line the front panel and under the front deck. Still more to varnish on the cupboard door frame sas they are solid Sapele so need three coats at least.

I just want a good few days to crack on with this canopy. I got Fibretex pattern material as the sheet i was using was either to tin and stretched or to thick.

Captain Faffer :):)

Re: The plant pot

Don't forget to take JFM's advice and put a bow in the top of canopy frame

Hi fella.

The hardtop has a slight curve to it and the rear hoop is 75mm/3 inch lower and just over a meter between them. You reckon that is enough for run off ? I can always lower the hoop more.

Re: The plant pot

W,

interior looks v.good indeed!

could we have a close up pic of this textured material you used? Looks interesting.
How do you deal with angles? I mean 90deg change of direction like below the side windows?
How thick is this material?
Looks like if you really crack on, you could have the interior in "floating condition" in less than a week, no?

cheers

V.

Hi V :)

The material is what @JFM sent me, cant remember now what it is but dam good stuff. I will have a look back on this thread to see if i can find it. Tough as owd boots it is.

The material is about 3mm thick in total so about 2mm foam scrim i think. to tired to see the tape measure. It goes around the corner from vertical to under the gunnel easy, when i prepped the 4mm plywood lining i radius`ed it. It does stretch a little not much though

Just trying to download some pics for you know. Not the best download speed here.

Yes not much to do on the interior, a few days work if that if i had time and energy. Its the outside thats gona kill me with the sanding.

thanks W,

thought it was completely different thing from the fitted pics...

good luck with the sanding  (also not my favourite job tbh)

cheers

V.

I was off work today as i had to go to the hospital so as it was a nice day fro once i grabbed the chance to start the canopy patterns. What pain in the arse that was, just the two rear hardtop corners to get a nice curve to the canvas.

The Material i got for the patterns is spot on ( Fibretex ) flexible and no stretch at all.

This is the corners that proved difficult o get it how i wanted. All sorted now though.

20190320-114414.jpg

20190320-114418.jpg

20190320-114411.jpg

So then it was mark it all up time for the top section.

20190320-134512.jpg

Then i made a full rear section although this will done in smaller sections. So the top trim to go all around the top section dropping down by 6 inch. Rear section will have a rear window which can be rolled up or removed all together leaving corner upstands about 6 inch down the sides and rear. to leave all open i we want.

20190320-155948.jpg

20190320-152628.jpg

I have gone with Lift the Dot fittings all around and the rest will be Zips fro material to material for detachable sides and rear.

I lowered a bit more the hoop to hope to get a better run off. If not i have aspring loaded bar that can slot in the canopy top when not on board to give a more support.

Looks good Wayne. Are you planning to attach the zips to a secondary flap sewn inside the top section overhang? That way the zips will be protected as water will run off the top overhang and not directly contact them. I have had both over the years, and protected zips definitely keep the cockpit drier. Good Luck!

Hi KDee

Thats the plan, all zips will be covered by flaps, top edge completely but an inch or so and the side zips will have close fit flap, not sure what they call it but the canvas edges/hems touch.

Well thats i can do it good enough.

Re: The plant pot

Got a bit of an update, good and bad. This is a rush job...ah but then in the last week i havnt done to bad.

As some may know i am in need of an operation as elbow is knackered and i was told it will be in for it to be done around September 2019. Well by eck i am in to have it done in two weeks ( 30th April ) so most of May i will struggle along with one arm now as the May launch has to be pit back to June.

So plan is..

I have booked in for the BSS on the 23rd May and a crane for June 24th to launch :)

I have been busy doing the work for the BSS this has been lining the LPG pipe as that goes in the battery area which is under the rear deck.

20190406-113221.jpg

20190406-113135.jpg

Beside that i have made a LPG cylinder holder and fitted cleats as these had to be done now due to the LPG pipe work needed casing off from leaks under the rear deck and that would be in the way of fitting cleats later.

20190415-112722.jpg

20190415-112722.jpg

What else for BSS

Secure battery has been done, boring cove that is all along with seal the holes where pipes and cable go through the bulkhead. with DIY grommets screwed inplace with EPDM seals.

Charger box needs venting a bit to make sure and water works needs a tap so i can check the water system/heater is working still, you never know.

Besides that the top rubbing strakes have been sanded back ( my fav tool is the belt sander :) ) after a few years of neglect and have come up well. Sods law it has started to rain today so thats on hold for a good day again this weekend.

20190413-120952.jpg

Come up ok, just needs a varnish now.

20190413-121014.jpg

Oh and if you remember a few years ago. The ply i used for making gthe rear deck was from Wicks, a DIY supplier, and the rear deck needed to be redone again as it delaminated in the space of a few moths. Well as i was expecting and putting off the rear seat lockers had to be redone as the same ply was used there. This time i made 7mm thick GRP sheets and done it again, as i should of done in the first place.

I have yet to fit the hatch`s but need to clean them up again.

20190401-173748.jpg

20190401-173754.jpg

Now another job was i wanted the horn to be central and not to the Port side so i routed out and reset the cables inplace.

20190415-135057.jpg

20190415-135132.jpg

To do this, just a matter of follow pics :) 20 min job ;)

20190415-135511.jpg

20190415-140722.jpg

20190415-141806.jpg

Re: The plant pot

Make Bridger from chopped CSM and add to resin

20190415-142255.jpg

20190415-142919.jpg

Then a few laminations of 350grm CSM on top, that can be fettle later when i crack on with the filling and prep for painting in June.

20190415-143538.jpg

So its near as dam ready for the BSS in May. In the last few weeks of May when off sick i will have a go at the
canopy even if one armed . I have the top and rear templates ready to cut out so a start is here.

So busy busy as i have a big job on fitting a narrow boat out aswell with the Boat Works service. and a few stoves to fit to others. No rest for he wicked :):)

Captain Faffer :)

Re: The plant pot

So as said i made a transom saver. Many like them some dont. After owning a lot of GRP boats i thought while i am at it i will make one.

It is made from 2mm stainless steel plate. Bent in a vice with a few bits of timber.

20190428-110027.jpg

The outboard will be bolted through it and the transom. To help it bend it cut a mm through it

To help bend it i made a cut on the bend line first.

20190428-110911.jpg

20190428-111730.jpg

20190428-112105.jpg

20190428-114302.jpg

Set in place the engine to get the hole correct then pilot drilled them.

20190501-180727.jpg

Fill with epoxy / filler.

20190428-123129.jpg

So for the bolt holes through the transom its just the matter to drill over size to 16mm for the M10 bolt then fill with epoxy filler and drill though again.

20190428-121723.jpg
[/IMG]

20190428-123129.jpg

Trimmed back and shaped a little then ready to fit once painted.....soooon :)

Re: The plant pot

This weekend has been mainly sanding what i could but suffering for it now so today all i did was wash it down in time for the primer.

There is a load to sand back under the lower strake but my arm is done in now so i will have see how i go. I have five weeks before the Op then the launch so no pain no gain hey. I was offered help a few times but folk keep letting me down. Ah well.

I did the strakes with four coats of Le Tonkinois and looks good to me. I was expecting to need to do more coats but it will be reat.
