Buckingham 20 restoration, formerly Plant Pot

That is incredible. Are you sure you didn't just buy it off Mike and Edd?

Bloody hope he didnt, it would of been bodged in places and bits missed lol.

Cracking job you done there to say the least. So where are the down n dirty pictures to show the modern LR boys n girls how its done ;)

And yep, i have yet to get somebody else to do anything for me. Whats the point in a project when somebody is going to do it for you.

Thanks guys, and you know when you do a restoration on something like this there is no hiding, its either right or wrong. If its wrong it looks crap and EVERYBODY spots it as everybody wants to find fault, just human nature, so this is very correct. And Paul, no I didn't know you were chief eng at LR!

And I can't wait to see final results on this project of Waynes!

You would not believe all the bits on this i am not happy with, if it wasnt for T telling me to stop faffing about it would still be a shell maybe with a few windows.

Happy with it though, next time i will take more care, in time for my retirement lol

I am very fussy and want things spot on as you do by the sounds of it.

Anyway must go, got boats to build :)

What a week it has been with work not going to plan to get home early enough to get bits done and then the weather this weekend not being kind.

As it goes though i got some done and happy with it all.

First off i got on with the galley cupboard/s and is ready for the laminate once we go and choose which we want, not going to be easy as there are hundreds of patterns to chose from, Oh yes, as i am typing i just remembered that i need to work out the fuse sizes i need and that i also need to measure up for the stainless steel for the over surround and splash back.

Always something i forget to do.

A few days ago the rest of the electrical gubbins arrived, all done now but for choosing the lights.......i think.

tn_20170930_094753.jpg

These re great bits of kit, WAGO`s, so easy to fit and great for small places.

tn_20170930_094819.jpg

half a dozen of inline fuse holders for the radio and USB etc etc

tn_20171005_181439.jpg

This was a reat old faff about but all done but for the fuses. I have done the dash switch board also during the week but no pic, hey it just a bunch of wires anyway.

Main fuse box

tn_20171008_130908.jpg

tn_20171008_130851.jpg

I needed another fuse box for the Malaga and Propex along with the TV and USB ports.

I decided to fit it up at the top in the cupboard in its own little box.

A few off cuts of 6mm ply that i had in the scrap box.

tn_20171008_133003.jpg

I has been known that i am a bit heavy handed so i put a small stopper to the lower right of the fuse box so when it swings back i dont overdo the hinges and rip it off, it has been know before now lol.

I need some larger spiral wrap for the wires but thats an easy anytime job to do.

tn_20171008_132730.jpg

That is about it for the electrics, good enough, could be a bit tidier but then i am no sparky.

Now then the Iroko, yes it is Iroko that i got the for the galley, Bloody hard to sand as we spent ( yes WE, i got T to do a little while i was on he boat today finishing the electrics ) a good few hours sanding it down. There are a few marks on it but nothing serious, T likes them as she says it gives it character, not sure myself.

I started with e Air DA as this is quicker than the Palm sander i have but soon runs out of puff so to give the tanks time to build ip i swapped to that Palm sander.

First hour, a cracking grain shows up, shame the planks used are such a different grain but colour up the same.

tn_20171007_163131.jpg

Here we have a split which i plan to add a little glue and clamp, it is a little loose as you can just see a little movement. Still no bad thing as it will be not really seen much.

tn_20171007_163144.jpg

These are the marks that show up, this is when i wiped it down with a damp rag.

tn_20171008_163143.jpg

tn_20171008_163205.jpg

I like :):)

tn_20171008_163235.jpg

tn_20171008_163140.jpg

During the week i changed the hinges on the cupboards to flush hinges, didnt like the surface ones i first fitted, The handle are now finger hole as i couldnt find any handles that i lied and i didnt want the type that stuck out.

Plan is to get some hardwood knobs and drill them out and make grommets for the finger holes to trim them off nicely.

Cant think of anything else that has been done at the minute but if there is anything else its only the little finishing touches etc.

Next episode should be the laminate for the galley and splash back for the cooker along with doors.

That i am looking forward to :)

Very little done as work is slowly killing me and to tired to do much in the last week or so. Still lets see whats been done.

Lets see then

I made a panel to cover the rear of the main fuse box and also the water level indicator.

This is removable just incase i need access.

Just a panel of 4mm Sapele veneer so as to match the rest of the heads/cupboard.

tn_20171029_164906.jpg

Water level indicator window, i still need to make a backing for behind the tube.

tn_20171029_164855.jpg

For a while i was wanting to use a laminate the galley splash back around the window and cupboards but after much debate as what to go with i/we decided to just continue the Sapele veneer. I managed to do a little around the window but thats it as i need to order another sheet for the rest and more Hockey stick for the trim around the window.

Oh yes, a few things i got arrived the other day aswell. Love the helm wheel and the horns are full SS, most are plastic and SS and as i am picky i got these second hand for a good price.

tn_20171029_164542.jpg

To make the risers around the cooker i needed to rip down a 105mmx27mm length of Iroko, and me being me i thought i may aswell by a table saw, cheap mind you. So then i can do that and make the light holders for the cabin

And not to forget a cabin step out of Iroko also if i have enough left, i could of gone to a joiners and ask then to do it but for what i paid for the saw why do that.

tn_20171025_192736.jpg

I had to make a stand for it too.

tn_20171028_144431.jpg

Only thing i needed to do was get a new blade for it and as it has a small 1/2hp motor it just did it with a steady feed through. Although it has done the job i have removed a 3hp 2800rpm motor from one of my compressors to use. Just make things that bit easier. Only thing to do is get a new pulley as the one it is fitted with has a 5/8 ( 15.87mm ) spindle and the new motor is 19mm.

This is the finished cut of the risers.

tn_20171029_114948.jpg

Lovely grain i think

This the sections for the light holders

tn_20171029_115006.jpg

I couldnt decide how to have the risers until T made a comment that they need to be low enough for the pans to sit on the hob. I stated with these. way to high.

tn_20171029_145235.jpg

Then down to this after a much faffing about.

tn_20171029_152201.jpg

tn_20171029_153814.jpg

These will be covered on the inner side in brushed SS and go up the back to the light above.

Now then, cabin light holders. I made these as the lights i got are not easy to remove once fitted in place due to the grips they have. These holders will be screwed in palce then i can remove them to remove the lights if needed. I got 60mm fitting lights so if i ant to replace them i can easy find a new set.

These are cheap lights at £26 a set of eight. May not last long but still we will see.

Started with a large hole saw a went through at the lowest speed the pillar drill can which is 500rpm and only halfway as the pilot hole will be used next for the 60mm hole.

tn_20171029_115012.jpg

tn_20171029_115254.jpg

OOpps i forgot the 60mm drill pics but you get the drift.

To clean them back i fitted a flap sander to the pillar drill and moved the bed up close to it so then i had this to ease the job.

tn_20171029_130900.jpg

Near finished product.

tn_20171029_125906.jpg

I wanted a larger diameter holder by another 12mm but that was the largest hole saw i had therefore i need to make three little seats for mounting screws in the edges at a 45 deg angle.

In the last few days besides the cabin big lights arrival also came the cupboard lights and door switches which i will fit asap. I cant decide on what eyeball light to get so here i think i will go with one of the cabin lights and get a seperate switch for it. Above the worktop there will be a small LED strip.

Infact these are what i have got. So one in each cupboard and one above the galley.

s-l1600.jpg

And the berth lights that arrived.

s-l1600.jpg

Thats about it for now. Think i will have a go and see how the helm wheel fits this week, ah its dark after work, mite have to fettle a light on the deck now lol.

Make sure those Horns face downwards, I never had much luck with water filled ones, it only attracted ducks :encouragement:

Well, I’ve been following this thread from day 1 and I just wanted to add my respect to other peoples - it’s been brilliant and I’ve been impatient for the regular updates. Brilliant writing, brilliant tenacity and excellent skills plus a fantastic wife to boot. After this project is completed you might want think bigger? Something along the lines of http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthrea...ersion-Project-Supply-Vessel-to-Support-Yacht maybe?

I agree Wayne needs a bigger boat. One with a workshop on board:)

I do wish you lived in the SW, there are so many jobs I'd happily pay you to do!

I also have those strip lights, someone on ybw recommended them a few months back, cheap but with a brilliant light, great for what you intend to use them for. I've put one in my heads compartment, not only much brighter now, but also using less power and a better profile meaning I don't bump my head whenever I go for a pee.

Some folk would thinks mad and get it cut at a wood yard etc. They dont get the point of hobbies and projects.

Thanks ;)

Not vertically ?

I have plans for treating T when its done as she has been so patient, she loves BMW Mini`s, i said i will rebuild her one to her spec for her 50th birthday but that will only give me around 8 months to do so and find the funds. So mite go and buy her a Clubman as she likes them more than the saloon.

I do plan on a bigger boat later in 2019 but not quite that big lol. Thats a Ship aswell lol. Will keep reading on that, thanks for the link ;)

I agree Wayne needs a bigger boat. One with a workshop on board:)

I also agree, This is a workshop at times though, then i tidy it but then its to tidy for a work shop so i make a mess in it again lol.

And at the minute i wish i was down there, stressed to wits end around here and lazy bar stewards dog walkers.

There is a a boat i have been watching for some time down your end. i will try and find a link and see if you know of it. must be famous it has been for sale that long. I know its a big place but just humour me lol.

I have yet to fit them, not sure if i mentioned but one will be above the galley and one in each cupboard. I cant keep up with what i have added to the blog.

Good to know they are ok, they are real cheap so i am always wary but worth a try.

Sorry to say that very little has been done, not been in the mood with this and that but chin up lad and all.

There are so many bits of wiring to be done i managed to get around to actually wire up the pump out to the dash, that is the drain system pump out for when the boat is left for longer periods etc, it drains all the water system with the Gulper 220, i will get this plumbed into the shower drain also when i get to that point.

Yesterday i finished the Big Light surrounds. I used small picture hanging brackets, shame they are brass effect as i wanted silver, i could polish them up as they are only coated, bit anal maybe lol.

To wire them up i used the Waco block again so then in the future when they need to be replaced it is an easy removal now, Just unscrew the surround then unclip the wires. The blocks are so small they tuck nice up away above the ply lining.

I cant believe how hard it was to find screws 10mmx2.5mm. In the end i found some but 3/8 x 2mm being sold at the local DIY shop, yes a mix of metric and imperial, never seen that before. Thing is they were 40p for ten, yes not a deal breaker as i only needed 24 off. A box of 200 12mmx 3mm are 99p.
Once i fitted then i fitted the berth lights aswell. Then just waited untill it was dark to try them out properly

These lights feel light cold not warm for some reason, i ordered warm. Still good enough for the cheap tat they are. I have a feeling they wont last long. Already the wires fell out of two of them where the soldered fittings are.

A little adhesive will help there but once fitted if careful they will be fine.

Anyway there we go. I can now work on `Faffer` after work now, i wish, i have more hours now at work again so doing 14hr days it is not easy when i get home to get motivated now. Sods law again, i was looking forward to getting work done over winter now i dont have the time.

tn_20171112_165714.jpg

For the galley lights i still need a small down light for above the cooker. Previously i shown what i got for the cupboards and today thought i would see what they are like under the gunnel for the worktop. One above the sink and one further to the left.

This is temp wired to see how it looks and i like.

One thing i checked was that they didnt glare in your eyes to much if your sat down, my eyes are getting worse now with sensitivity to light so i always check they are not to bright and direction of the lights.

tn_20171112_161345.jpg

tn_20171112_165756.jpg

Last bit was the door for the fuse box and the Big Light switch.

It still needs to be hinged and the switch needs fixing properly but that can be done when it has all been varnished with the Tonkinois next year when temps get up again, bit cold now for all that.

tn_20171112_161504.jpg

Ay up, how can i forget.

A week or so ago as you may have seen i got the helm wheel, i had to sit it in place to see how it looks and if it fits nice with out interfering with the controls when at full throttle at 30 knots on the plane......ok i got carried away a little there lol.

tn_20171105_112727-jpg.123398

tn_20171105_112754-jpg.123399

Now when i got this i didnt look close enough and missed this damage to the face of the wheel, gutted but an idea is to cover it with a turks head maybe and a marker for full steam straight ahead.

tn_20171105_162934-jpg.123400

I am still pondering over how to line it out in the cabin. I was keen on Suedette but folk have aid it will just grow mold/mildew badly and is difficult to keep clean, then i want to stay away for leatherette. Another choice i have been shown is using Hessian and painting it with a mold resistant paint.

Not to keen on that either.

We will see, a few months of still for that job so time to ponder.

Wayne,
What method will you use to line the cabin? I have some ideas but I'm interested first know what you plan to do. Remove the existing plywood panels and cover them, then re-fix? Or make new fabric-covered plywood panels to go over existing ply panels?

I will be doing it the basic way so to use contact adhesive on the ply and fabric then stick Down.

And to add to that the inner and outer corners will be trimmed with hardwood quad and corner trim. aswell as more detail it will help give a longer feel to the cabin.

Christ thats looking good :encouragement:

Why thank you Sir ;)

OK, that's good to hear.

I'll send you next week an A4 paper sized sample of Maharam Inset fabric in the colour "flare", which is basically beige. Here, https://www.architonic.com/en/product/maharam-tek-wall-inset-108-flare-2/1113202

This is an uber high quality technical wall covering fabric made by Maharam in New York. Fairline used it on some of their boats and I specced it (in a non Fairline colour, "Tinsel", which is silver https://www.architonic.com/en/product/maharam-tek-wall-inset-001-tinsel/1113195 ) in my boat, pictures below. I happen to have a spare roll of the flare/beige colour that I could mail to you. Note that it is 2mm foam backed, and if you just spray contact adhesive on rather than wrap it over a panel as well, you are reliant totally on the strength of the foam, which isn't much. But as you plan to quad and corner trim it, you will be ok, because that will take a lot of weight.
I think this would look good on the walls and triangle berth under the foredeck but you probably want a white-ish vinyl on the ceiling. Anyway I'll send sample and you can take a look. I'm happy to mail you however many metres you need, foc, as it is doing nothing in my store room and it would be much better on your boat! It's about 130cm wide on the roll and can be run horizontally or vertically
