Buckingham 20 restoration, formerly Plant Pot

Re: The plant pot

I have done a fair small jobs but dont like to update without pictures, so just a few here and there.

I have done a few more repairs to the hull, no pics at all as its boring to show holes that have been filled and sanded...and filled and sanded......etc etc etc lol

Go on then, this small hole got bigger like they do, GRP and rust go hand in hand lol Dont know what i prefer welding cars of patching GRP

MMmm i cant find the finished pics, but you get the idea...its smoother :)

I have started to make or modify the Houdini hatch as i am to tight to buy a new one, and well as you know i like to mess abut making things, this is in progress as i need some smaller seals, the ones i have are little to big. Oh and some Interscrews are needed as i will be keeping the latches to keep it locked. I had to make new hinge knuckles for it as the original ones are a 2mm to low.

All will be shown when done ;)

I have decided for the inner frame for the hatch i want it made from Sapele.

This brings on a new project to make a steam box :)

Cant help myself

Pic of it half way through it and no need to show more as it went a bit soft it worked for half an hour if that, soon got up to 210degf

tn_20170808_183019.jpg

Like i do i mite make one from fibreglass or do one the easy way and get some timber.

I need the radius to be 100mm so a bit tight for Mahogany so will prob end up lamintain a few strips together to get the 25mm x 20mm needed for the frame.

Another job was to get more done on the interiors :triumphant: WE HAVE RUNNING HOT AND COLD WATER and HOT AIR, and a COOKER WORKING :triumphant::triumphant:

That does feel one big step ahead.

The Propex heater is great aswell is the Malaga 5 water heater. dont tell me you want pics of hot water running and me sat in my boxers sweating to death with the heater on lol

One point on the Halaga 5 water heater is the drain/pressure relief is a crap design IMO, to get a pipe/hose to fit it is not easy, and the drain tap vale drips a little when emptying the tank.

I made these for the seating trim and will be oiled and fitted once i fit the Sapele Veneered ply i got this weekend gone.

A few cuts and the remaining snaps out easy if you snap the router bits you have :banghead:

tn_20170806_132926.jpg

After a reat faff to get the Sapele ply, i went and payed for it when they dont even stock it any more, what plonkers, they had to go and get it in for me.

tn_20170814_161422.jpg

The veneered ply is for cladding the heads/cupboard and seating, plus a few more bits here and there.

A while ago i got 10m of canvas to practice my sewing in readiness for making the canopy, i used some to make a template

tn_20170802_183159.jpg

Just whizzed around with a jigsaw...carefully

tn_20170814_164745.jpg

Just needed a slight trim and spot on :)

The TV will be to the top left and behind that and to the right will be one of the access doors to the water heater. At the bottom another door for the Propex access. Some where also will be the power point for the USB/charger point with slide out shelf/s

Again this will be oiled, not keen on varnish.

tn_20170814_171936.jpg

I think thats about it for now.

I need supplies and boat funds have ran out :( that annoys me, serves me right for going mad on nights out and socialising. makes a change i guess.

Yep, it's a shame Wayne doesn't live near Southampton, I'm sure a few of us could help top up his boating funds!

Morning chaps.

Oh yes back at it :)

They are nice comments but i dont see them as professional enough repairs/works to get paid for. I have got to the stage when i am a perfectionist, or as T calls me a faffer and its never perfect to me what i do. Reason these jobs take so long i guess lol.

That glass bit goes all around the cabin, i have yet to decide if to insulate that area and line it, no point but then it may contribute to a little condensation, even though there will be vents in the seat lockers.

That area you see though is for if i want toa dd a fridge at a later date, i made it just big enough for an over standard size fridge,

Re: The plant pot

Wayne I think you underestimate your skills. What you are capable of and the range of jobs you can do is much better than many of the so called professionals.

Dennis

Re: The plant pot

My problem Dennis is that if i do a job for somebody and they dont like the finished product i would be gutted. Although i have fixed many a car for folk and done jobs on folks houses and they have been happy with it and come back for more, just time now to get things done.

I see folks boats as there pride and joy and more than there properties for some folk.

I dont let anybody do things for me as if i dont like the end product i would curse myself as i know i have wasted money as i could of tried to do it anyway and be happy with it more if you know what i mean.

How on earth would i work out what my skills are worth on the open market as Bouba asked.

While we are at it on jobs doing, i have decided to varnish the internal Sapele timber as a lot is laminated it is risky to use danish oil a sit can affect the laminate so i am looking at using a clear varnish instead. Never varnished, well a little when i had a job french polishing many many years ago for a few months, different job all together that though.

Just finished the cladding of the cupboard and seating with courtesy lights fitted, need to order some SS vents yet for the seating/berths. next month for them.

Looking good though :)

Re: The plant pot

If Wayne or Vas lived and worked near me, I could say to them, 'I'm going away for the weekend, while I'm away could you please put an extra bedroom in my boat. And while you're at it could you increase the beam by a metre."

Re: The plant pot

I agree with other posters: your work is outstanding. But could you work at it full time ? Much might have to be away from home, or in decent shed nearby if you could get one, and to make a profit as a one man specialist requires talent (you have that in spades), application (ditto), and being able to run two or three jobs at once so that you can go from one boat to another while the glue dries. I have no doubt that you could get the customers after seeing your work here. Making enough money out of it is another matter!

Would it be worth contacting Javelin of the forum, and going over to the East Coast to see how a big boatyard works, and talk to him about why he loves the work he does, much as you do, and how he plans his own work ?

If you built your own business, it could be very rewarding with a few staff working for you in a couple of years.

I can always move, just give me until next spring i can live on the boat :) T will follow someday i should think.

I have been thinking on the idea today, infact i have for a long time now but no brains for this kind of thing and business talk goes over my head.

There was a small workshop near me for rent at just £60pw that could of easy fit four or five 20 foot boats in. I was tempted to see if folk were interested in sharing for boat building/repairs etc as there was a small yard to work in also. Rates though were the same and then i looked into the insurance, business gubbins the lot and then the dream dwindled away.

Like a small DIY boat club and folk could of brought there boats for me to fettle.

I just dont have the finances to do anything on the business front but for traveling to folks to do the work or bring/collect it to me. Then its the time, i dont really have much time as i never stop but for to top up this build blog. Saying that though if i was trying to build a business then i am sure as hell i could make time as once i get a project i like to get stuck in and that is how i would look at it at first.

Anyway this shows how i work, not as good as you may think

What a ponker

I cut the cupboard panel to size the other night and last night i cut out the openings for the heater access for the Malaga and Propex. And whilst i was finishing off the shelving for it i tripped over the panel and snapped the bloomin thing

And i didnt even need a `moment` i was rather calm

tn_20170818_170753.jpg

tn_20170818_170749.jpg

My luck is in though as this area will be covered by trim for the corner and inspection/access door to the Propex :)

It was not the cost of a new sheet but the work again making it as i have thrown away the template.

And ran out of ply now for the shelving lol

Re: The plant pot

Hi Wayne

Why cant you use the piece you broke as a template if you wanted to make a new one

Regards Don

Hi Don, bit of a late reply sorry, yes I could of done, when I was typing my head was here there and everywhere with jobs to be done. Not thinking properly.

All came out fine anyway :)

Here is what I have been up to over the last few days in between trimming the bloomin 60 Conifers around the house, fair does T did most :)

First off was to finish the cladding of the seating/berths and cupboard, plus make the shelving. One problem i came across was that the Propex instructions says that it is best to have the ducting as short as possible. So I set the the heater as close as possible to the vents. Slight mistake as the inlet and outlet on the unit is closer together than the vents can be fixed in place with out the ducting needing to be used of at least 6 inch long. The ducting will not flex enough with the 4 inch i used at first.

Just a matter of moving the heater back once I had removed most of the internal panels, a faff about but sorted now.

tn_20170828_180336.jpg

tn_20170828_180344.jpg

Oh yes this is before I found I needed to move the Propex back. new shelving and waiting for the cladding to go on.

tn_20170826_145503.jpg

To cut the Veneer I used an angle grinder with a plasma disc, very neat sharp cuts ;)

A little smoke is made and burns the edges a little but a whole lot better than a am and easier than a stanley knife.

To cut of the courtesy lights though i used a stanley knife.

tn_20170817_163601.jpg

To fix in place I found this box of nails that has been sat in the shed for years, never throw anything way ;) Aluminium and Copper, I used the copper for the trim, along with glue.

tn_20170828_103915.jpg

tn_20170828_115813.jpg

All panels stapled then glued down, stapled close to the edge so then they will be covered by the trim when finished.

Here I just finished the aperture trim so still the doors and panels to make this week I hope.

tn_20170828_174947.jpg

Storage space, all panels are removable by removing a few screws if i need access in the future.

tn_20170828_175057.jpg

tn_20170828_175106.jpg

Now to the seating, all Sapele trim and veneer again. Top trim is just a soft wood as no point in using Sapele there.

tn_20170828_174854.jpg

tn_20170828_174838.jpg

With all that being done I am a happy chappy :)

In between all that I wanted to get a start on the wiring, thing is I still hadnt painted the inner door panels and there was a few holes that needed to be filled from when i was working out where to fit the gas strut for the to half of the door.

Quick chamfer and fill then and and wipe down before a few coats of paint.

Main fuse box just below the `big light` two way switch and at the bottom is the cut off switch.

Well done Wayne - Keep up the good work!

OMG what was I thining, my stomach just done a somersault lol.

No regrets though ;) Been quite a journey and still a bit more to go.

Just seen your name `No Regrets` , i have non either as said above, still luvin it aswell :)

Thanks :)

No rest as just had my T and need to fettle a few things like the wiring for the courtesy lights and USB ports etc.

nothing wrong with your skills and determination 10/10.
to build up some confidence doing work for others, and getting paid for it, start with small jobs.
charge by the hour, and most importantly, choose your customers.
there are at least two chaps round my area that have too much work on, one round the house and one round the boat.

Thanks for the compliment:)

I would love to work on boats, not a clue where to start though as up here in Manchester there isnt much about. Once the boat is launched though i will be mooring it around Yorkshire i think. a bit more going on up there.

Big problem at the minute is i have recently got my hours back at work so its a 3-4am start and 4-5pm finish so a long day and then i can only get bits done during the week after work, batter money for the boat fund but less time now. Cant have it all i guess. Weekends are all i have now really. then things can get in the way.

As they say, Not enough hours in the day, i am getting there though ;)

With all that fresh wood I bet the smell in the cab is amazing, coupled with a little solvent glue of course....:encouragement:

Fantastic work Wayne.

Oh it does, no solvent though just fresh Mahogany :)

oh a very good job you are doing there, hopefully you can get it all sorted out and finished.

Welcome to YBW, First post aswell ;)

I can and will have it sorted, launch in spring, on course for it anyway :)

Well weekend is here so loads to get at, cupboard doors to be made and the ..........darn just remembered i am out of glue. Heads door and trim etc etc.
