Buckingham 20 restoration, formerly Plant Pot

Hey Wayne, how's tricks? Haven't heard from you in ages and I for one miss your updates. Hope all is going well with you, your work and of course, the boat! I finally got mine in the water, not without some teething troubles on the sea trial, but that's all well in hand now. Do let us know that you're still with us and take care.

Hi matey,

Been long hasnt it.

I think boating never goes without a few teething problems, would not be much fun then lol. Glad for you that your once again afloat. I am more afloat that not now lol.

I am still alive and kicking, just as shattered all the time now and need a holiday, and thats me saying that this time not anyone else, T ( wife ) is a diamond putting up with me, going to take her out this weekend as i am hoping to get a big walk in trailer/shop so out for the day and treat he to a nice meal.

Since i have started the Boat Works services i have had little time to myself, i am shocked how good it is going. Just got back from four days away fitting a new galley and dropping off a job on the way down. So in that way all is going great, more to come soon.

Had a few bad weeks recently as bought a new `tool box` and its not going to well with it as it has problems but i am in the process of talking to get it fixed. I do like it over the Berlingo and it will be needed i hope if a job big comes off.

Bit bling for me but hey ho, spoil myself for a change i reckon. That Berlingo smells like a dirty old mans sweaty bits. ( from imagination taht is lol )

Glad you are alive and kicking.
Tool box looks nice!
Was chatting to a forumite about a nice job that's right up your street today.
I'll leave him to contact you but just to point out to all that I recommend you and your work :)

Good to hear from you again. Always an open invitation to you both if you ever fancy some chill time in Kerry.

Why thank you, never been over and always said i would love to, one day maybe, T is going over ( forgot where now ) with a load of her work mates to celebrate there birthdays, all around dame time. I was going to go over and go fishing but no time now.

Same to you as well if you ever get over here. We booked a holiday last year to Lanzarotti ( ? ) and it is 6 weeks and days today away. Havnt been bothered about it until recently,r a good chill out in the harbour ;)

Glad you are alive and kicking.

Hi fella, how you doing.

Tool box is a dream to drive for an old thing. fuel is amazing for its size.

Appreciate the recommendations as always from an previous customer, must be doing something right then.

Thanks ;):)

How you all doing. I though i would give an update as to what hasnt been done.

As some know i started working on other folks boats which has set off faster than i expected it to and that has or was taking up a lot of time i have spare. Sods law hey as Faffer has been neglected more than i would of liked.

Now i have not been sat around when i have spare time and have been doing the hull work, lots of grinding back and filling and sanding etc etc.

Now the hold up is that for some time now i have been suffering with a bad neck/shoulder and arm, which i think has caught me up from many years ago and a bad rugby injury i got when i near broke my neck.

So now i find it to painful to lay on my back sanding for more than 10 mins, even worse its more painful sat down and i drive for a, living lol.

This weekend i got some more resin and bits n bobs to try and get the interior finished, mainly the Heads atleast as i can cope with that and most other things.

I have had to fail myself and ask for help on finishing the hull, not easy for meas i have never in my life asked for help on anything, just to proud i guess or something.

Oh and the `Tool box` has gone or going back to the finance or dealer a sit has been one hell of a lot of trouble to get it fixed.....loooonnng story and a little gutted as i love that car, still have the Berlingo but i think i have a buyer for that if as he wants it converted to a camper.

So keep watching if you have the patience as i have to see when Faffer is done.

Sorry no pics as the new phone is being a pain to download pics.

Wayne :)

Remember those old boats I was telling you to look at that had been abandoned at the upper reaches of the Conwy River?

Well we found another Hatter to pick up your torch for you :p

The inspiration

Mind you he has his work cut out for him but I wish him the best

Hi matey, yes i spotted him last week on FB, i did send a few messages to him but FB is hard work and cant keep up with it all still lol. I offered to help out ( no charge awell ) but no reply.

Could be a nice boat, i do like them and see them often going as projects for a few grand though, cant se he paid that much lol. Look in the same condition as mine was. New transom maybe and bearers and more.

Hey Wayne, glad to see you're still going strong, despite your ailments. I suppose you can relax the pace a little and aim for your big splash next year? No harm to have everything sorted first. I'm still fettling and fine tuning but have caught my first fish this year only recently. Work has been busier than usual and has gotten in the way of life somewhat. Keep the updates coming and the best of luck to you.

How do matey.

The way things are going it is going to be next year now. No big deal as the best of the weather has gone now and i fancied a s spring / summer launch. And the house in need of serious work doing, never rains but it pours as they say.

So what did you catch, i was in Lanzarote for a few week had a good session and caught naff all. go on impress me :)

You won't be impressed at all as it was just a few mackerel. I was doing a bit of a sea trial and all was going well so I dropped a line overboard. I had to cut things short as I was watching the tide for getting back on my mooring.
No worries as we have some decent winter fishing further down the bay.
Mackerel can be caught from the bridge across the bay, so it was no big achievement on my part. I hope to get out again after I get home on the 20th.
I want to get as much use out of the boat as is possible, but already I have to scrub the millions of tiny barnacles off the hull. I think the warm spell this summer didn't help! But I can walk out to the boat at low tide and do the worst of it!

Hey I am always impressed with a few Mack`y, hope they were good, you did take them home ? You cant beat them on a BBQ.

Oh and I have no troubles with any Barnacles. more the green stuff lol.

Cod season coming up soon over here. think i mite do a few sessions down Wales for a break.

A good bit of news on my boat, a chap off another forum ( fellow follower ) has offered to come over this weekend to help get the sanding done a bit more for me while i crack on with the interior :) some great folk out there willing to help when needs must for an owd git like me, lol he is semi retired and me not even fifty and knackered .

Happy to hear that you have some help. If I was nearer I'd be happy to muck in. I have a cover to sew up for a local who's restoring an old boat. It's nice to be able to help out. And Yes, the mackerel were lovely. So different when they're so fresh! The cod will be coming on stream soon, down the bay in an area called Derrynane, home of Daniel O Connell for the historians. Anyway, keep the updates coming and get your pictures sorted. Take care.

At last motivated to get a bit more done on Faffer.

A week or so ago a chap from another forum came around and gave a hand sanding the hull wile i patched a few hole so now it is water proof from below as well as above. Still loads of sanding to be done. I had a go yesterday for half an hour and it really didnt do me any good so i gave up.

I am still struggling to download pictures as I can only do one at a time and it is a long process to do it so as filling and sanding pics are boring I will show an exciting part I am at. Not only that but as I have slacked such a lot on the boat and there is no point now in hurrying in getting the outside done to paint with the weather and all I will do what I can elsewhere.

So canopy time :)

BIG job ahead and looking forward to it, I made a table last week for the sewing machine o make it easier for such a large job.

I had to clear out the spare room for the sewing table, a job in itself. Just knocked up out off 18mm MDF and an old scaffolding frame i had lying around.

43952777_10217835851712820_2941070192710516736_n.jpg

I was so busy and then could not be bothered I didnt manage to get some steel from the local stockist to make the mock up/design for the canopy frame, therefore it was to the local DIY store yesterday for some 22x72mm timber, Ripped it down to three lengths of roughly 22x22 so similar size to the 22mm SS tube i will be using for the frame.

Before we go any further i am not fixed on this design and working on it.

Frame set up

20181028-133147-1.jpg

20181028-133121-1.jpg

Then folded down

This was the first time but i decided that the back upright is a little to out of proportion and high.

20181028-131320-1.jpg

So dropped it by 100mm and looks better and gives a better fall as it will now slope down more to the back.

20181028-132816-1.jpg

To fold it all down it will need the sides at least removing then the top folds down as a backrest maybe for the seats. Held up with chains or strap which i think will be better.

I am going to practice all this on the trailer and making a cover for it on a low frame just to see if i can do it first and get a good fit.

Lets see if i can keep motivated for the next few weeks as this week i will get a sheet of 5mm ply and do a bit on the interior and lightweight mosaic tile sheets for the galley. That is what i have decided to do on the galley unit as after thoughts it will hopefully look good and easier than laminating over the ply base it has at the minute in one sheet. Just being picky but i dont like the idea of laminating the unit in a few sections.

So any thoughts on the canopy frame please tell ;)

Looks good (I still feel bad for daring you to make the hood:(). Just a llittle word of caution that I’m sure you know about. When an outboard is moving fast, the exhaust gases are through the hub underwater but at idle and I think slow speed, the gases come out of the engine housing. If there is a gap at the back of the hood the wind could blow gas into the hood and the people inside. Like I say, I’m sure you know this:)

Dont feel bad matey, just imagine if it works out and how happy you will feel then :) You cant feel any worse than me and when i got it home a few years ago. OK maybe a bit longer than a few years.

On the outboard fumes, yes aware. The canopy will go over the engine lid forward of the edge by a few inchs and pined down. Although i am thinking on have the engines lid rear section sealed down fully as in bonded into the transom and the front section hinged for access and sealed with EPDM D section.

That should keep all gasses from the engine out of the deck area.

I was going to reply Sogood a si spotted your message in my yahoo.......so erm, yes i am going to use turnbuckles, press studs.

Anyway hope its not getting to cold for the fishing over there. I am so wanting to have a day down Wales soon for some Cod.

Hey Wayne,
Somehow I've had two senior moments in quick succession, having written and deleted two posts! Anyway, here goes again. I was curious to know if you'd intend to use the boat with the canopy/cover in place, and if so, be aware of your headroom if you opt for the lower setting on your top section. Just a thought.
Regarding the fishing, I intend to set out further afield after the cod to be found at Derrynane. This means a 60 mile round trip from Kenmare, right down the bay and out into the "open sea" though still very coastal.

I suggested the turn buckle fasteners as I'm finding that my snap/stud fasteners are getting very tight, but a little lube or graphite should help this.

I don't know if you got my mention of having the canopy material overlapping the boat, either inside or outside with consideration given to avoiding having rain or spray being driven in under the canopy, making it's way inside. I'm sure you know what I mean.

And don't be afraid to sew things up a little slack to start with. It's much easier to tighten up a seam than to expand one. My Bimini was a lot of fitting, marking, sewing, refitting etc. until I got it right. I also covered the tubular frame with pipe insulation which gripped the fabric somewhat and helped things to stay tight. The attached pic shows the top still under construction. Bimini 2.jpg Anyway, keep up the great work.

Ha Mr Wayne sir, I am thinking you are needing to make frame fold down out of way somehow, to make U size to fit on top of engine box you are making yes. Then not got hood around neck huh when going huh?

Makings nice works you are.

Hi there

I was going to go with the idea as you mention of having the upright as is in the picture being able to slide down the lower section so then the cross bar can lay flat on the engine cover.. Only problem, being a small ones, first is a tube size for one to slide over the other with little play and the other is finding a good fitting to do this task without using clamp screws etc. Spring buttons could work.

W,

I doubt you can find tubes that would slide one in another, and if you would, the larger one would make a mess and score v.badly and v.quickly the smaller one!
I tried to design something like that for my aft deck, once you'd do it properly with an ertalon piece to slide through, sizes were way too bulky and ugly, so dropped the idea all together.
I'd try and design it in a way that you have parts pivoting out of the way, not easy I agree, but I think doable.

looking forward to some real action and progress!

cheers

V.
