Buckingham 20 restoration, formerly Plant Pot

Re: The plant pot

It has been a while since much has been with one thing and another but today i had to get the front cleats fitted, reason is so then i can get the bow insulated and lined out.

As in previous posts i have made the cleat spreader plates from 18mm ply and 3mm SS plate.

Tomorrow i hope to get a bit more lining out done, if its to cold to use the foam then i will see about the frame work for the galley or head. Oh ye, i will refit the door for the cabin first and see if the gas strut i have will do the job, cant remember the Nm/kg they are.

I cannot see any of the photos in this post. It seems that I have to log on to Dropbox to view them but I am not a Drop box user!

I have seen previous pictures OK.

Re: The plant pot

Ah well not as much done as wanted but enough so I can get on with the frame work for the head and Galley and in between when its is warm enough I can do the last bit of insulation in the bow as i have removed the front bulkhead now, more room and all.

I got a bit giddy with the foam again. Better than not enough though ;)

Cant wait until I am bald, not easy to get the stuff out what hair i have left

Near forgot to feed the horn wires through the top

I still need to trim back the edges of the ply but I didnt want to rush the setting of the adhesive so I have left it like this for a day or so.

Just to show the foam used in this way works a treat when surface are that bit uneven or difficult to use a board type insulation.

Just remember I also fitted a gas strut to the cabin door top section to hold it up. No pics but it works well, maybe another 50Nm will be better to lift it up quicker with less help. I had to to a bit of trial and error to get it set in the correct place as the hinge point is in an awkward place for the measurements i have for them.

Oh and the lights hanging are not going to be used as they are courtesy lights, i just wanted to see if my wiring worked before i covered it all up...and it does :)

A few days off work at Xmas so hope to get a few days on it ;)

All Best folks or New Year :)

Re: The plant pot

This saga reminds me of another one which a friend undertook which went wrong. he was a mechanic and after 5 when he stopped working on customers cars he worked on his "project" he was putting an E Type engine in a Ford Corsair. It took him 2 years and when it was finished when he went on his trial run it would not steer properly and "hopped" round corners. The moral of the story is that all the time he worked on the car he could have been working on customers cars and charging them, so effectively 2 years later he could have bought an E Type.
Looking at the quality of work being done on the Buckingham could working more hours in his day job enable him to buy a newer canal boat.

Yeah but I suspect enjoyment drive these projects rather than economics.

I understand what you are saying, but where on earth is the fun in that. No sane person who did not like manual labour and DIY would take on a project of any sort.

I have had many a boat and car for that matter and not one has not needed to be fixed in one way or another, it is the way i like it. Not long ago i bought an UMM Alter which had been sat under tree`s for over 10 years, engine not run for even longer. I could of bought one running.

Joy of doing things, some folk are made of different stuff I guess.

Another important point is that when ever i save up it goes elsewhere before i have got the funds I need. This way I spend as I get it every month. I am not a rich man, never have been and never will be, but happy in what I do :)

What i have spent to date i would get another boar boat yes, but it would not be in as good a condition as this one when it is done ;) I would rather enjoy build a boat then having one that i know and is in better condition that an old bodged up boat. Seen a fair few of them around.

Labour of love is what they call it :)

Now then, while i am at it I have been up to bit and bobs. The heads is framed out but the front half of the cabin still needs lining out but it has been to cold still.

Please keep up the good work on this project. Many of us are enjoying your thread, and maybe, some like me, are learning bits and pieces from you!

I helped a friend put a Capri V6 in a Morris Marina Van, handling was interesting, so we went on to put the Capri suspension on the Marina. It kept us out of trouble for a considerable amount of time. In the end we had a really surprising Marina:encouragement:

IMHO... Quite a difference between your buddies fundamenrally flawed ambition and what appears to be a work of wonder arising from not much at all plus sheer passion, ambition, skill and patience that many, me included, admire so much. To me, its really nothing about the day job or matrial objects, its all about the artisan and dilligence of creation; its a privelige to be invited to see it happen!

Re: The plant pot

Happy New Year all :) I hope you all had a good start to the new year.

I am very much looking forward to 2017 so fingers crossed all goes to plan.

I have a small update to add.Over Christmas and New Year breaks I have got a few bits done. I was wanting to get the whole boat lined out I only managed to get a bit done as the weather has been so cold the expanding foam does not work as good as it cold.

Still, I managed to get the rear end of the cabin lined out a few week before Christmas so I could at least get of with doing the frame work and clad a little of the Head.

Oh darn, sat here typing this I remembered i needed to remove the Houdini at the seals have gone again and is dripping slightly so i will be having a go at resealing it.

Anyway

I have used 34mmx12mm timber for the frame work for the Heads and the cupboard for the water heater and storage. 25x4 screws and plenty of Gorilla glue, good stuff I swear by for all timber work.

In this picture all the frame work is just screwed together for now until I am happy with it. As always I do not work to plans, all in my head.

The frame work nearest to you is going to be for a cupboard and hot water heater which will be in the top right. That will be a Morco F-11EL.

It is lined internally with 5.5mm ply and will be later clad with PVC Cladding.

Inside the Head I have started to make the frame work to hold one of the tanks in place and an access panel to where the pipe work is from the tank to the pump. I have yet to decide where to fit the freshwater pump. It will be either on the back panel ( I do think the pump will be in the way, I need to measure it up yet and see where the pipe work will run ) or to the side in another access panel below the fuse box.

By this time all was glued and screwed so I decided to leave it as is for now so as not to disturb it to much for the glue to set.

Little by little we are getting there :

Re: The plant pot

You sir, are an artist

Why thank you Sir, my wife thinks the same maybe a different type of artist, something to do with the alcohol I drank over Christmas and New year :very_drunk:

I attempted to do more today but as usual I got disturbed as I forgot these was a walk I said I would join in with to protest about houses being build on the green belt land near where i live. Dont think it will help but there was a good group show up and reporters show up.

Along with that as usual folk walk by and stop to talk about how the boat is doing and just gossip. At times it is easier to get work done if the boat was in a boat yard with all disturbances I get.

Re: The plant pot

I have really enjoyed reading about this project. Looking forward to seeing more progress.

More power to your elbow, ww.
