Hard Hat on, incoming awaited.
Surely, the technique learnt decades ago as a 10 year old foredeck hand, is throw the bucket forward and pull it up at the vertical?
DO NOT let it go behind you when the flow of water takes over!

The technique is to land the bucket upside down so it fills before it gets to you.

^^ This. Use a canvas buck, which colapses instead of becoming a drogue. A lip weight helps.

Why the hard hat on? Why waiting for "incoming"? I learned the method on an RYA course, I assume many people have learned the technique without having to be a "a 10 year old foredeck hand." You have to be prepared to manage the bucket if it does go afterwards from your position, it's not that hard to recover from.

No idea why anyone would think a canvas bucket is better, I have found them to universally useless in all sorts of situations.

I don't have one but this one from Force4 looks pretty sturdy (pretty sturdy price too!)

We have 2 of those. Eventually the handle rots out. Replaced with rope. Still going strong. Our line has a spliced loop in the end so you can secure around the wrist. There's are pretty hard tug when you are doing about 8kts and the line goes tight. Penalty of having a dog that will pee on deck?

I couldn't find a decent sturdy bucket in West Marine, until I noticed the one being used by a cleaner. I asked if they would sell it - and so they did!
