Broom 41

See KevL has got his Broom 41. has that model got a full planning hull? and if so whats likely to be its
cruising & max speed.
See they have a rare Broom 44 "flybridge" model at Brooms brokerage about 88-89 they tell me that the hull
is very much like the P435 and that Princess stole the design for the P435 from them. Must admit
the hull looks very similar

The P435 hull gives a wonderfully soft ride even in atrocious conditions in fact I would say its on a par with an old Fairey Huntsman and almost as good as a Toughs Cobra 33. I for one wouldn't blame Broom for cheating on the design.

They reckon Princess pinched it from them but I cant imagine Bernard needing to nick any design aspect
from anyone.

How about strength/layup? Remember the problems with the 38 or was it 385? where the hull stringers let go in the after end, or don't we talk about those minor problems?

Wasn't anchored, I picked up this gigantic mooring! Mudt have weighed about 10 tions, you could see all these humugous blocks of concrete on the bottom chained together, it got up to 46 knots, I had the mizzen up, to hold me straight, almost capsized the bloody boat, had to get it down in the teeth of the storm, not a pretty sight Coplin in his shreddies trying to manhandle the bloody thing down! Got it down eventually, went back to bed! Next motning it was still blowing and we'd moved the mooring about 30 feet!! Bloody amazing, good job I wasn't anchored, I'd have woke up in Menorca! By the way I like brooms, used to lust after the 37 ocean! Sad aren't I!!

B41 has a full planing John Bennett designed hull but its a little different from a typical Fairline or Princess hull like the 435 in that the B41 has a small keel. Upwind, it'll feel like any other planing hull, downwind a little more twitchy 'coz the keel gets pushed around a little particularly in a quartering sea but this is only a characteristic not dangerous. The upside is that the keel makes the B41 very docile at slow speeds
B41 will do 26knots max with 300hp engines, about 20-22knots cruise
B44 has similar design of hull to B41

Thanks for the info Mike I think the small keel is worth the characteristics you mention for
low speed stability more grip on the water for bad conditions in marina
Whats does your profile "mean gone but not forgotten" have you sold her ?

Yup, the Broom has gone and we're planning to go Med boating next season.
I dont know whether its the keel or the relatively low air draft but the Broom was a real pleasure to manouevre at marina speeds compared to others boats I've had

I'm not surprised that you've sold her, she was very nice indeed and I'd have saved a fortune if I hadn't shown SWMBO a Broom 41.

I am told that the Broom 41 will indeed do 26 knots flat out and cruise at 22 with a pair or Perkins Saber 300HP drinking 10GPH each which will be bloody marvelous if it's true. Also the small fin keel makes them easy to handle at low speed although I'm not sure if this is going to negate the bow thruster, wadya think?

Progress Report - Sherringham Lady left Lymington at 09:45 after waiting 18 hrs for a Police escort so didn't arrive at Glasson until 21:00, needless to say no lift in until this morning. The nice people at Glasson have put her on a visitors pontoon and even put the radar arch and covers back on ready for me next weekend. Now all I have to do is try to figure out how everything works before I move her to Fleetwood on Saturday.

Sounds great Kev I'd love one of those. By the way my Crowns keel is a lot deeper than your
little one and it does not hamper the bow thruster.

I fitted a 75kgm bow thruster to my Broom (approx 7hp) and that worked just fine. Where the keel does appear to have an effect is when you turn the boat on the engines - one in reverse, the other forward - the boat seemed a bit slow to start the turn so I found myself using a few revs or using the wheel as well, something you dont have to do on a 'normal' planing boat
