Brokers - a shed load of cash , do they earn it?

It will cost me £12k in brokers fees to sell my boat. Ouch! That's £20k of gross income to earn to pay the fee. Ouch again. Do we all go on and blindly pay these fees and think it's okay? Or do we question and haggle the price down, or have a go at private sale. I'm being consistently quoted 8% + VAT as a brokerage fee - is that what everyone is typically paying?

TIA

Rob

I bought and sold a few this last while and it seems to be from 5 to 12% as the norm. Its the old story of products move an money changes hands. I would rather see the 40% tax band sorted that you base your extra earnings on?

Cheers. Roy

erm, no they generally don't earn it (although some are good and some are even very good)
I can get people to sign a piece of paper and then give them the keys.

Absolutely agree.

Same with builders, they just stick a pile of bricks together and flog it for a huge profit.

And what about airline pilots? All they do is steer a plane, don't even have to land it, its all automatic innit?

North sea oil diggers? Stuff a pipe in the ground under the sea, billions of pounds!

Like you say, anyone could do it, nothing to it.

Yes of course you should haggle. Remember, out of that commission the broker has to pay for:-

1) Their (expensive waterside) premises
2) Staff
3) Advertising
4) Often a cut to the marina
5) Rates
6) Gas and electricity, etc

What alternatives are there out there to avoid brokers when looking to purchase? Are there any well known websites or forums?

Thats a good one, an accountant questioning the amount of fees payable to a broker!!!!

Rearrange these words into a well known phrase: Kettle, Black, Pot.
