Hoping to sail from Brixham to St Peters Port in Thurday returning Sat or Sun. Sailing light handed in a 42 ft Yacht. Advice would be appreciated. Do I need SSR?

If you're likely to arrive after dark, and tired, there's a lot to be said for aiming at the SW corner and approaching from that direction.

A poor viz. landfall on the north end of the Little Russell, first time there, could quickly become quite stressful, so I'd recommend doing it the easy way. Look quite carefully at the tide streams around your expected time of arrival and make them work for you.

St Peter Port Harbour, and Victoria Marina, is very busy, so expect to moor temporarily onto the 'Waiting Pontoons' just outside the marina, and watch the process. The harbour staff are very helpful, so if you tell them it's your first time there, they'll usually look after you.

Be wary of three things: the fast ferries coming and going ( you need eyes in the back of your head ); the sill barring access to/from the marina; and the fuel pontoon - which dries 'unexpectedly'. Go see the collection of photographs under the glass counter top in the chandlers...... Priceless! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

We did this last week, leaving Brixham at 0630 arrived SPP around 1815 via Les Hanois.

SW corner also avoids the TSS, though Doyle passage is shorter it needs attention.

You do not need SSR. Harbour master is very helpful, just follow him; if you draw 2m places in Victoria Marina are restricted. Eating at La Fregate is superb. Visit Victor Hugo's house.

Use the Doyle passage, it will save you about an hour off the trip. It's not as bad as it looks on the chart.

I believe you still need to use HM Customs form C1331 to check out from England and telephone Customs on return. You need to inform them even if you go to France first. You can now download the form. I deliver mine to the Harbourmaster`s office where they are collected once a fortnight.

Try Beaucette. Beautiful and peaceful. Excellent restaurant under the Harbour Office. HM will always come out to help you in if you call first on Ch80. Cill is HW+/- 3hrs. Waiting buoys outside if needed. Buses into town if needed. But so peaceful. Oyster Catchers are the noisiest animals around. Maybe the local fisherman will sell you crabs or lobs. Just perfick. Love it. Biggest vesel in there is an Azimut 97 but that needs help getting out as you would imagine!
