Bridges over troubled waters.

Been out the loop just recently mate. Will be time for me to move my boat permanently if bridges get put in. I'm a mobo owner so doesn't make no odds to me but the increase in traffic, noise, pollution, etc will be the deciding point.

Although it sits nicely on the river at Southwold so might just remain there. Been looking at a 30's motor cruiser as a long term project which will sit nicely alongside.

Yep I will probably quit if more nonsense occurs on the Orwell. As for your project I thought you would be busy snapping up bargain priced parts of Oyster Yachts and sticking it back together again :-)

Apologies for not bothering to click on the links........20 metres clearance has been mentioned, who on here has a rig higher than 20 metres and likes dodging the mud on the East Coast?

I don't think this will be stopping many East Coasters reaching Ipswich!

My mast height is 17.5m so with the the stuff on top of that there won't be all that much to spare.

The next size up (38ft) is 19.5m so would require some tidal planning..

Maybe 6-7 years ago I saw mathewriches sailing a racing boat that I believe could only get under the bridge at very low water. Conversely I saw an Oyster, Tillymint aground under the bridge with engines screaming to get unstuck.

Do Oysters have more than one engine. You do seem to have a problem with Oyster Yachts.

I know for an absolute fact that Mathew Riches has never sailed a boat in his life. You must be talking about a different Mathew Riches to the one that posts on here.

Any diagrams, pictures of where these bridges could be sited.❓

Sorry haven’t got time to read whole thread. Too busy with a last bit of training for the England Wales Match‼️

Come on Engerland

If memory serves bridge heights are based on highest astronomical tide so other than at HW at top of springs with exceedingly low pressure and a long whip aerial on top of the mast it won't be too terrible a calculation ;-)

My mistake about "engines". As for Oysters in general they are wonderful creations and Ipswich people are very proud of them and Spirit Yachts and of course the huge motorboats next door. I was puzzled by Tilly Mint being grounded as there is supposed to be 15 feet of water under the bridge and I couldn't imagine a yacht with that much keel. The guiding light behind Oysters who posts on here is very highly thought of by his staff and suppliers. My mate has an Oyster 26 and is also a supplier and he would not hear a word against him

Thank you for the post.
Spirit & Oyster have provided high quality employment to many for well over 35 years, with Oyster double Queens Award winners too i believe

My gripe is where they are now based. They and Orwell Yacht Club have monopolised the river bank. They used to be based about half a mile further along the river and were a very small operation but when the West Bank was reclaimed in the 70's the harbour master at the time moved them to the present location and there they and OYC are an obstruction to navigation.

Think the Tillymint you are talking about is a Discovery 67 ,Air draft 28 metre drawing 2.7 m .So may have strayed to far over under the bridge

Anything built on the river bed of a tidal waterway below the HW mark is an obstruction to navigation especially if one is navigating a small kayak or canoe. The River Orwell is a public waterway and nobody has the right to obstruct it unless they get a legal consent or a law is passed.
