Bridges over troubled waters.

Think the Tillymint you are talking about is a Discovery 67 ,Air draft 28 metre drawing 2.7 m .So may have strayed to far over under the bridge

You may well be correct. I saw the boat moored outside of Spirit Yachts and I believe it was for sale for many millions of pounds. She came past me as if I was standing still.

Anything built on the river bed of a tidal waterway below the HW mark is an obstruction to navigation especially if one is navigating a small kayak or canoe. The River Orwell is a public waterway and nobody has the right to obstruct it unless they get a legal consent or a law is passed.

So where have Fox's blocked navigation?

So where have Fox's blocked navigation?[/QUOTEWell Habebty, a pontoon and in this case several pontoons cannot be navigated through unless you have an ice breaker. Fox's are themselves obstructions to navigation but unless you have lived in or visited Ipswich for years you are unlikely to recognise the creek from this map;

Without the dredging for Fox's marina I doubt there would be much navigation to be had in Oystrich creek

Ostrich Creek also known as Bourne Creek was a great place to moor or just picnic. The problem was caused by a former harbour master locating Fox's without lawful reason and the river owner allowing the West Bank to be filled in and built up. All the residents in Wherstead Road lost their moorings they had at the bottom of their gardens and walkers lost a Right of Way. I often walked along this route along to Bourne Bridge. There never was a creek such as it is now.

Its called progress, think yourself lucky the Orwell bridge was built. That alone has saved countless lorries going through town

Seriously?

Without the dredging for Fox's marina I doubt there would be much navigation to be had in Oystrich creek

At low water there is very little room to navigate but it is enough for local people with their shallow draft dinghies, kayaks and canoes. The River Orwell should not be reserved for the well off outsiders and the rights of way along the river should be protected. We have reached the stage where many local youngsters never get on the water or even go swimming and fishing.

It is a curse as is the massive harbour at Felixstowe where most of the lorries are heading to or leaving. That is not progress for people who were born here although it maybe for large business interests.

Look what happened at Southwold Hbr, all silted up due to greedy land owners who were also on The Hbr Board

Maybe but different to the River Orwell which is one of the few rivers that doesn't belong to the Crown. The Orwell is a public river and ABP are the light house authority and IBC own the river bed. Nobody has the right to obstruct navigation and that includes ABP and IBC. I never got far with my legal studies but I believe the Ipswich Dock Acts when they allow rights of way and reclaimation of land are in fact Ultra Vires. As I am winding down now (coming up to 75) it is possible the situation will never be rectified.

I very much doubt my Grandson has ever climbed a tree, many kids are not even allowed out on their own these days. Its a very different world today

Yes I believe we should. Barges could always reach the quay and they are far big enough for this small river.

Even your old maps/charts show that the channel has been modified to improve navigation for deeper craft

it is possible the situation will never be rectified.

I suspect you are right on that point.

The house I am typing this from is on the side of a hill upon which children used to play and people walked their dogs. No doubt 50 yrs. ago the local ancientry expressed similar views to Toyboy’s but increased population, technological progress, leisure developments and wealth most people could never have dreamed of have changed the UK, not always for the better. Innovation has been inevitable since man first walked; and Ipswich seems to be the focus of such at the moment. Romantically clinging on to the past is frustrating as it disappears, as it undoubtedly does.

Unfortunately it is a different world but we too had difficulties during the war years and never let that halt our fun. Unexploded munitions claimed a few lads but in general we knew what to avoid. Today I believe kids are over protected and molycuddled. It is the very reason youngsters should be allowed access to the country side and the river so they can harden up and learn about risk and responsibility I believe.

Yes the map I posted is indeed a map of proposals to improve navigation for commerce. I have no interest in commerce.

That is why I spend so much time on the issue. I had a really good time growing up in Ipswich and I would like to preserve those rights enshrined in law to help those following me to also have a great time growing up here.
