Is it me or is it 90% of things you buy these days, big or small are either broken substandard or not what they are supposed to be

I was given stuff over christmas and bought stuff over christmas and most has had to go back to be exchanged or whatever because of faults! all kinds of stuff!

This annoys me no end I get fed up spending my time sorting out problems on meaningless 'stuff'

Is it Im in a bad mood or are others feeling the same way!

I was just thinking of posting the same message!!!

Bought an oil filled radiator from Argos and I had to take it back because the thermostat did not work. Bought a battery drill from B&Q, the chuck was jammed and would not operate.

Trying to take SWMBO back, she didn't cook properly last night. Whats the world coming to?

being in the retail trade I totally agree with you. Cliffdale in his post named B&Q and Argos. Cheap and cheaper. If you want quality you have to pay for quality. Our failure rate with Toshiba and Panasonic, which we specialise in, is less than 2%. The junk is sold because people buy it and are happy enough to accept that you get what you pay for. When the British public insist on quality they will get it but they will have to pay for it. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Ahh but.... I re ordered the oil radiator from TLC. It was £8 cheaper. The order arrived within 2 days of placing the order.

Im now running 2 rads on the boat and a dehumidifier. Tis lovely and cosy.

Last weekend I bought a spare battery and a car charger lead for my Xda phone from O2.
Lead just plain faulty. Battery not what it said on the box. On the packet it said "standard battery", "1200 mAh", like wots in the phone. Open the packet and the battery is 1050 mAh. Took it back and they had about six in the shop all the same. Surely this is wrong. They cant say 1200 then just bung in the packet 1050 every time. Trades description or sumfink. Must get round to a big complaint. Battery life is crap with 1200 so dont want 1050. Moan, whinge.........

Half the kids' Xmas prezzies had to be taken back (well, a bit of an exaggeration, but you know what I mean). One 'main' prezzie didn't last out Xmas day, another worked twice, and failed on the third use, and not cheap stuff, either.

My dad bought a Black and Decker drill in the 60's, and it was still going strong 30 years later. But it cost a bomb when new. The same drill is now £30 or less in B&Q, but if it lasts a year, I'll be surprised.

Everyone demands lower prices, and the only way to compete is to build down to a price. Sadly, while some may be happy to pay for quality, there's hardly any opportunity to buy it these days, as it has been squeezed off the shelves by crap.

I agree with you its not everybody wants to buy cheap its that everything you can buy seems to be made cheap, even 'quality' brands seem to have less quality than they used to, but then they still insist on charging higher than average prices for the name. I'm sure there was a day when you could pay more and get a better product rather than pay more and get the same tat!

well im glad I got it off my chest and other seem to feel the same way!

..........'even quality brands seem to have less quality than they used to'.....

How true. Look at the problems that bastion of quality, BMW, had with their small 6-cylinder car engine in the mid-nineties. Had to replace thousands of them FOC but it was all very carefully managed and the brand image was preserved. Now they've got an equally quiet recall in progress because of serious heating problems.
Still, wasn't so bad as when they tried to make a marine engine! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

With the greatest of respect, it is too simplistic to dismiss everything that is cheap as 'rubbish' Surely, value for money and fitness for purpose are better measures. As an example, Makro are doing a 18volt cordless drill, variable torque setting and hammer action, complete with charger for.......£5 (+vat). Mine has done £20-worth of work already. Don't expect it to last for ever, bought 2 anyway! Might even go and buy a third, just to be on the safe side - at that price it would be rude not to. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
