is it any good?

Don't know that specific model, but it looks like a typical early 90s VHF. Not DSC obviously, but could very well be perfectly acceptable for voice use and will have much greater range than a handheld. If you're thinking of keeping it, the condition of the aerial system is what you need to check - it's just as important for good operation as the radio unit itself, and a lot more vulnerable to weather and mechanical damage. Common problems are pinched and chafed cables, corrosion (in cable or connectors), and water inside the cable (it's a dielectric with a screen spaced apart from the core - in cheap cable the spacer is permeable and can fill up with water).

can I just put the aerial on the radar frame - higher than the average mobo and much shorter and easier cable run if the masthead one is jiggered

As it is line of sight transmission and receive, range will obviously be less with the lower position. Whether it is satisfactory depends on what you want to use the radio for. Worth considering a DSC set anyway as it gives you better funcionality in an emergency.

Sealine radio......... like mine....... had it since 1984.......non dsc obviously

Not used it much ...... really bought to stay in touch with home via the coast radio stations and link calls when the children started coming away with me.

Still in good working order...... never been any trouble. ....... pretty good performance when I have used it

I bought a good aerial with it which was probably sensible .

Definitely a thing to keep unless you want DSC.

Yes put an aerial on the radar frame as far as possible from the radar if you have one. Makes an excellent standby antenna, AIS antenna or VHF FM entertainment radio antenna. Bit as said if you want full range you want mast top antenna. olewill

I'd just connect it to a battery and give it a go. The worst that'll happen is that it explodes, showering you with burning fragments of plastic resulting in the loss of your eyesight and years of painful skin grafts.

Stupid boy! Now he will rip that out!

strange that

well it turns on - there is silence - just shash

I assume it is an aerial problem

but if it is no better than my lovely marine handheld then it will go

D

Just put a piece of electrical wire into the antenna socket. About 17 inches long. Select low power if you can then try talking to your HH. or anyone else. good luck olewill

...or possibly just nobody was talking. What channel, and how long did you leave it on for? It's winter with a continuous series of gales coming in, so very little leisure traffic out there, and that's the majority of what's on 16 around here.

You're somewhere near Portsmouth, aren't you? Try listening to QHM on ch11.

good idea - I shall do that

going down today to contemplate and ruminate on the wiring and also have a little tug at the headlining

thursday should be good enough to allow me to work on the Hull

I wouldn't be going to Hawk House. Plan B is to insulate with camping mat and hold that up with some nice faced ply.

I'll hold the ply up with wood screwed to the bulkhead similar to the stuff the other side of the bulkhead in the saloon.

The laminate floor underlay which was temporarily glued up and painted with vinyl silk 4 years ago was plan A.

the wet closet will peel down and stick up asgain with a hot glue gun I reckon

the bog is a lost cause - it the old headlining and is stiff and disgusting - so that is coming out and I will glue gun camping mat to the ceiling

we removed the cockpit drain valves - pretty horrible
