Dear all
I have a 23mt swedish icebreaker conversion. She is made of swedish steel but has a 2.5" thick pine on-lay deck. I have just recaulked bow and starboard deck with cotton and oakum and poured tbs glue and put new wooden plugs too for that area.
It has started raining and i am thinking of next stage....
I plan to apply boat soup. I dont mind blackened deck as superstructure is white and it will look good and most importantly no rot.
Right now it has nothing on it. I just put salt after rain so salty water prevents mould to some extent as i was waiting to return from dry dock, do the gunnel plates and recaulk before boat soup.
I have the BLO, turpentine and stockholm tar. I plan to order japan dryer closer to day of application as i read it needs to be fresh(?)
I have few questions:
1. what sort of prep? do i have to sand or just scrub and clean as currently has wavy grain....i am hoping to avoid sanding if not needed as my hands are tired after single handedly raking old oakum and caulking .....
2. how many applications of boat soup?
3. How long do i wait between applications?
4. do i wait for summer or can i apply once the rain stops and its freezing cold but dry weather...i feel this is not good idea to do it in winter but need to check so as to not waste time....
Any advice would be greatly appreciated
