Boat Show numbers

Figures we have been sent by National Boat Show's PR agency tell us that attendance was 140,000, as opposed to a reported 160,000 in 2005.

There will be a full boat show report - including responses from exhibitors and visitors - in March's MBM, out on 16 Feb.

I would not be surprised. I thought Saturday was quiet for a weekend. Neither did I find it very inspiring so Mr & Mrs Y will not be bothering to go next year - a similar view echoed by a few of our friends too so it may become a trend......

There are a few companies that won't be attending next year, according to a friend. It is only a matter of time before the show will be turned into a Trade Show like METS in Amsterdam.

In my opinion, there is not alot for a family to do, not unless the Sunseeker guys let kids on board a Manhattan. Yeah right. The whole show is a money making scheme that companies and the public fall into every year. The NEC and Southampton shows are good, I also like the regional shows, atleast some effort goes into them!!

Sunseeker were fine with my kids ,Fairline were the problem could not get past the ropes,Anyway my youngest daughter was only interested in the Sunseekers because they had the most tvs.Wo betide any salesman on boats we looked at later with less than five.

Two million people in the UK buy new cars every year, and there is one motor show. Two thousand people in the UK buy new boats every year, and there are two boat shows. The figures are wild guestimates, but the logic, or lack of it, remains the same.

It's a day out Brendan...but mainly inland stuff.
You wont find any swindleries selling electronics..lots of windows, stoves 'n stuff for barges so ideal for hlb..
When we were caravanning we used to go regularly and in fact bought a new caravan from there in 2001.
Some useful stands like CK Tanks who do loads of marine stuff and dont do the boat shows are there.
I think a few sea boats were there like Hardy, Rodman..but all the marine stuff is in one hall about equivalent to one of the excel halls.
Go and have a look...once is OK but probably leave it a few years before going again..unless youve some sneaky plan on the side to buy a motorhome of course....

Steve.

Thanks Steve.
I've got a friend in Scotland who wanted pictures taken of a new motorhome and knew I was into boats. She wondered if I was going. Said no initially, but might take a trip up there just to have a look around.

The London show is audited and the nubers will be on the ABC website in a couple of weeks, that will give you a true picture. Dont ever listen to the exhibiotrs as everyone will tell a different story.

Can your 'friend' not take some pics themselves, as we have a Caravan and Camping Show up here at the start of Feb, straight after the NEC show, oh and its also called 'The Affordable Boat Show'!!!

Well, i spoke to serveral, and they all said it was down / not as busy as expected. Will be interesting to see SIBS attendence this year, once the LIBS results have been seen.

The video games industry has now abandoned Excel as unpopular and expensive and has gone back to its roots at the Business Design Centre Islington.

Trouble is, this country has no concept of attracting trade shows. Yes we have Olympia, Earls Court, Excel and NEC, but they are all run for the profit of the owners.

Los Angeles solved this by building the LA Convention Centre out of public funds. They charge exhibition event organisers very little for using the place, on the understanding that they pass the saving on. The benefit is that LA is now a major convention centre and the money it brings into the local econonmy is astounding. One advantage is that as a small company you can exhibit at one of the largest Video Games trade shows in the world for $500. For the smallest space at a UK video games trade show, it would cost around £3,500 before all the other expenses like £150 for a light, £350 for a 13 amp socket and just about every other charge you can think of.

Of course, Los Angeles had to find some way to compete with Las Vegas, where the hotels will allow use of their own exhibition facilities for nothing, if you can guarantee the numbers of punters attending.

Isn't this similar to the Messe setup in germany? It certainly makes a lot of sense to be attracting conventions and we seem poor at that.
