Seeing the posting about stolen boats being featured in YM got me thinking.

Why do we never padlock our boats to the mooring chain/pontoon? I never do, and I've never seen it done, but it would be easy. Is it just traditional that we leave them so that anyone can take them away. I know that a lock can be broken, but perhaps it would be better than nothing?

Just curious.

Yachts tend to be stolen specifically, thus a thief would come tooled up for the task. Tenders ribs and dinghies are stolen for joy rides, and thus a wire/chain and padlock mean the opportunist moves on to the next available . Thus I dont padlock my yacht, but do padlock tender to davits, or (when applicable) to the shore.
