Boat purchase offers saga

Whenever you make an offer it should be time limited. For example, this offer is valid until noon on the 1st April 2022, thereafter it will lapse.

Just call and ask how the vendor responded to your offer...no subterfuge, no reverse psychology. You're buying an old boat, not negotiating a ceasefire.
This ^^^
It gives nothing away from your side .
Honesty and openness if asked are the key to unlock this here .

But wait a second week first to allow time for seller to come round .Presume you detailed loosely the work estimates of essential stuff needed right for seaworthiness now and desirable very soon Eg paint or radar upgrade etc .

Its obvious why you would want to know why in terms of a rejection by 2 weeks so you can move on .It doesn’t show extra keenness at all .

May be the seller is preparing a counter pricing for your reckoning.
Eg you said ( we do not have sight of your list( s) seacocks at £250 each x8 when in fact perfectly good enough can be had for say £125 each thus 1/2 your deduction .
Ie accepting it needs seacocks ( using this as an example) but not your sky high reckoning price wise .

If so , not saying you are but loading repairs , ballooning up your “ written “ detailed reasons might have spooked them both .

Haha.. That did tickle me. Buying a boat can feel a bit like a NATO summit at times though. :D

I get on well with one particular broker and he is extremely busy (and that isn't just 'broker talk') so also bear in mind we are still in crazy times where availability of new boats is still running at a very long league time and the used market is generating a lot of work so personally I would add in a little extra 'patience factor' over previous years.

I would leave out the bit about a second boat...the broker maybe very well aquatinted with the local market and know you are lying....just give them the deadline....or say your wife wants a motor home...
Hard to guess.....scenario 1 - broker is plain lazy, so any kind of chase will or will not have an effect. Scenario 2 - the broker wants the vendor to respond but does not want to bug him. Having a 'you might lose the buyer because he's interested in another boat' to present to the vendor might be just what the broker needs to get it over the line. Obviously don't make up a boat that is round the corner, pick a real one that's maybe abroad. Or a motorhome , or a villa in Marbella.... just something that pushes a quicker decision for fear that your wallet is going to empty elsewhere

This again...... A call to ask how they are getting on gives nothing away, and will confirm that they have received your written offer, and that they have passed it on, (or not been able to so far).

Don’t get the fixation on prices on this place that occur frequently…..plus or minus 20% ….doom mongers saying there will be a crash….people are mad paying more than something is worth and I’ll decide what it’s worth…its market value don’t you know…..

ffs it’s supposed to be our hobby-passion-obsession….that is what money is for!

Op really likes the boat….why would you not buy it……find common ground with the broker or owner….buy it…..bring it back to its former glory……..getting a compliment from someone once it’s done knowing what it used to look like before being done is to me worth a darn site more than looking at a few numbers sat in a bank account.

Well following an email last night I received a courteous no late this afternoon, but the vendor has now made a serious concession towards the price I am happy to offer.

So my turn to return the volley now.

As the party holding the funds I am in the master position. So I have withdrawn my offer, but have advised I retain an interest. My offer really was the limit I am willing to pay.

For the vendor a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, and in this case I doubt there is a second bird anyway, and I have just jumped back into the bush !

Thanks for all the comments.

So I will be back sometime to explain, if we do reach a deal or not, exactly what she is. Can't say more presently as this negotiation is not done yet.

As a result of Britain’s brief dalliance with Europe…there are other brands that the great British boating population are familiar with ?

What on earth makes you believe this? :)

What remains unsold on UK broker websites .
40ft Flybridges.
There is a good choice from one UK builder and virtually nothing left but he odd orphan from Prinline, ?
No names.Not that daft. :)

The market for 7 metre sports cruisers is strong on the Hamble.

Just sold my boat for 56% more than I paid 4 years ago...?
That's some mark-up but I'm not surprised. Air travel and car hire prices have rocketed in some areas. Two people I know, one in the UK and one in France have been charged triple the normal rate for car hire.
So relatively small sports boats are a good way of getting on the water without a fortune of running costs. I can see the appeal.

Yep, hire car prices in France are nuts this year

It's great if you want to get out of boating, or downsize.
But the best time to get in, or upsize, is in the middle of a market crash.

And Sapi

...........and Spain just got some eyewatering quotes for Majorca next month .
I heard it is down to a shortage of cars. They offloaded a lot of current stock in lockdown, and now can't get new cars because of the chip shortages. Don't know how true it is, but sounds feasible.
