Boat names

I have owned my boat for 5 years and now I am going through the procedure to put her on part 1 of the register. The survey is arranged and all the paperwork ready to go but I have to change the name because "Moonlighting" is already taken. Yes, I have heard the old chestnut about bad luck but seems I have no choice! My problem is that, apart from not being able to think of a "new" name(serious suggestions welcome) I have no way of checking what names are not being used. Is there an on line source for that info? As far as I know, the same name is permitted providing it is a different port.

not quite...

you can't have the same name full stop but if there is a 'skylark' already registered you can have 'skylark of cowes'. also, you can't have 'skylark II' (or 2 or Two) but 'skylark too' is allowed. only the owners of the original skylark are allowed numbers 2, 3 etc.

incidentally it may be considered bad luck to change the name but it has an honorable tradition. it has always been common practice for owners to retain a name on selling a boat, thereby forcing the new owners to come up with something new. Lloyds of london 'own' the name 'Lutine' and now have the third boat of that name.

Has the ruling changed, then? I used to be part owner of a gaff cutter called Spinaway X - not because she was the tenth Spinaway but because she was berthed in the River Exe. She was registered, and so were several other Spinaways with different suffixes. A far as I can recall the original Spinaway, no suffix, was a Thames Barge - maybe Dick Durham can illuminate.
