just been quoted £800 so survey a modern 32 foot sailboat. The survey that I had for my previous similar boat in 2023 was < £500. Seems to me that £800 for half a days work is wildly excessive and I dont see any reason at all for the ;level of increases.

What have you paid recently? Solent / south coast area

One at £500 and the other at £850. Both figures approximate and last year. It is a good days work plus the report. I learnt quite a bit from bother surveyors.

You'll feel even more short changed on your £800 survey if they forget to alter their copy and paste template and leave another boat name at the top along with details of equipment 'tested' that isn't actually on board, as experienced by my partner.

At least they got her name an address right.

Was it a purchase survey or insurance survey?

It’s not half a day though is it.

Not convinced. Careless in the report writing doesn’t account for all the professional training, liability insurance, travel time m, actual work plus the report writing itself.

It was a cut and paste so I'm suggesting that the Surveyor didn't spend much time writing it.

I had a Greek survey my boat a couple of years ago in Preveza for insurance. He was a total idiot. He saw my shower outlet in the cockpit and presumed it was the bilge pump - didn't even open the lid. On the rudder he said that it went only so far in one direction - he even marked the hull where. If he had gone up and turned the wheel rather than just push the rudder from side to side he would have seen that there was no problem. Worst of all, the very next year the rudder had substantial problems and had to be reskinned in Port Napoleon which he was too stupid to notice. He said the rigging was a problem but wouldn't tell me what the problem was and how serious. I rerigged it anyway, but it was probably a cost I didn't need to expend.

Why did I end up with him? Left things too late and he was suggested by the yard.

Euro 750.

ps: He had me fill in a form with details of access. I gave him the code to the padlock. He sent me a whingey text to say that he couldn't get into the boat because there was no key in the office and decided just to go off to Athens for the day.

More ps: He sent a file which was absolutely huge and I had to get him to cut it down to usable size. Idiot.

SPYROS KOSTELETOS - avoid him like the plague.

You pays your money ...
If you ever come across a chap called Gerd Karl please kick him in the bollox for me. Even the agents were appalled about his useless 'survey'. Lesson learnt. If buying abroad, send someone from your country.

Its two days work, a day surveying and a day writing the report. The report is the really laborious bit.
Everything else is so much more expensive than 5 years ago, and your surveyor has to pay all those living costs like everyone else.
Its well past time prices were put up in that industry.

At the end of the day, it depends if they are thorough & good, A good surveyor at £850 could be value for money, a poor one at £500 an utter waste of cash.
