ridiculous survey costs

I used Toby Lester and was really happy with both his attention to detail, cost and quality of the report, he is based in Kent but has just done a pre-purchase survey for my friend for a boat in the Portsmouth area and he only charged petrol money for the travelling (he had done surveys for them before).
Yes Toby is very good. Worth paying his travel costs

Never ask the boatyard you are buying from for a recommendation but ask around for recommendations as like everything else there are good and poor surveyors and you gets what you pay for
Depends on the yard! The Broker I bought via had an A4 page with contact details for half a dozen which he gave us a copy of - and then went through them and pointed out some of the pro’s / con’s - like “he surveyed this boat last time 5 yrs ago so will probably cut and paste a lot of the content” and “he seems to be a bit obsessed with expiry of fire extinguishers and gas pipe rather than looking for real problems” and “he is very highly regarded but usually takes about 3-4 weeks to fit it in”.
