Boat in build pics (Squadron 78)

hi jfm

sorry havent been on in ages. computer hardrive decided to die!

looking great as usual! the name lit is simply STUNNING!!!!! (although the iphone doesnt have a red light so must be a street light or something)

any ideas on a date for departure? the plane is currently in 'maintinance' so hope its not too soon!

hope everythings well been doing naff all to mine due to weather.

speak soon

Hi Phil
Alas I think I'll miss your plane :(. Fairline are doing a 2-day handover of the boat starting tomorrow (tues). I will faff around with it a couple of days in Ipswich then take it to Essex Boatyards this coming Saturday 5th March. It will be there only a week becuase it is booked on a yacht transport ship to Genoa departing southampton ~15th March, so I'll likely do Essex-Southampton Saturday 12th

Weather is lousy anyway. What you need to do is get that plane down to the South of France please where the sea is azure blue - much better for pictures!

Like you, I'm wishing this lousy weather would improve...

Best wishes

Apropos nothing in particular, here are a few pics from today taken in 3deg C Ipswich. Brrrrrr! The first two were taken while the compasses were being swung

During the build quite a lot of effort went into the passerelle. I wanted one a metre and a bit longer than the normal one, and bright s/s not white powder coat. Also I wanted auto stanchions (Lozzer knows why). Fitting the longer length in was a significant challenge for Fairline because it clashed with the bulkhead between engine room and crew cabin. Besenzoni made a custom passerelle, very nice job, with auto folding stanchions. In fact they made two; there was a dimensional "issue" with the first one and there was no alternative but a full re-make. The second one was made near the end of the build and rush driven from Italy to Oundle to be fitted to the boat a few days before it was loaded on the truck to leave the Fairline factory. Anyway the end result is very nice indeed. The first pic below shows the standard passerelle, and the next two show mine, so you can see the dfference.

Yep sorry, varnishing is what I actually meant by painting, of course.
Knowing your attention to detail, I'd rather forget oil, because I think you'll soon be disappointed.
And I think it's much easier to prepare the teak for varnishing if it has never been treated with oil.
That said, I'd also consider to keep them natural, and just clean them in the same way as the deck.

I oiled my teak rails and they looked great for a few weeks but then fairly quickly started to attract dirt and looked a right mess. Now use Sikkens which lasts for ages.

A bit? I don't think Searush will agree with that...! :D
Jokes aside, she looks indeed stunning in the night pics.
I'm interested to know more about the lights attached under the bimini s/steel tubes, 'cause I might have a use for them. Can you point me at their producer?
Re. the passerelle, I can see why you wanted it to be longer: the std one is ridiculously short for Med usage. And polished steel is also much nicer, of course.
I'm just not sure about the auto stanchions only. My personal preference would be auto on one side (stbd, in this case), with the option of removable ones on the other side. Not the most elegant solution maybe, but very convenient.

I will get you a close up pic and see if there is a maker's name

:D That's what I have. Auto on starboard, and drop-in 5 or 6 vertical poles on port side. You have to be very careful with removeable stanchions in case a guest pushes "auto retract". That's what happened on the boat Lozzer captained. You can imagine the mess it made. I will turn off the passerelle at the main breaker panel when I use the non-auto stanchions

Very nice indeed the 'night' shots - also the tender looks very nice too ;-)

I had intended to post this earlier but stuff got in the way.....Anyway wanted to wish you a successful handover with the builder and a Bon Voyage to EBY and onwards to S'hampton.

I have enjoyed this whole thread tremenously.

Thanks for the time and effort with the words and pix.

Enjoy yourself!

I bed that the first one is now left somewhere in a corner
Perhaps it would fit in a Canados 70 ?
could go nicely together with a new big Hi-Lo platform.... :)

on a more important topic,
I completely forgot to calculate these wonderfull underwaterlights in my C70 project. Have to do my homework again !

nice pics J, with the lights on she looks so beautifull.....

ok well i will let you know if it comes out of mantinance early.

now that really would be amazing! and if your willing to pay the avgas im sure we could make that work! :) :) :) :) lol

failing the plane being out on the 12th i will stand on the cliffs between dover and folkstone :)

Lovely to see the final conclusion to your first showing some 9 months ago. Any idea as to the the number of Unique selling points you could use if and when you sell Match. Is there one that you would say is the best.
