Boat in build pics (Squadron 78)

John, what did you finally decide to do with the treatment / protection of the wooden gardrails on the deck ?
looking at the video, I'm not sure if they are treated yet

At the moment they have had no treatment. They need sanding, then I think I will oil them and see how that goes. I just haven't got around to them Bart becuase I have 100 more important things to do on the boat before it goes on the ship. And I have loads of shopping to do for equiment, becuase I sold the sq58 complete turnkey. The 78 is being recarpeted at the moment; tender is being installed; name needs to be attached; I have to re-make the outside sofa this weekend with the new 45degree teak arm boxes, etc. I have not even had a handover of the boat; that is scheduled for 1+2 March

The handrails job will probably be done in France, where it's much warmer anyway :D

when you get at it,
in our office we have been using "HG Parquet & wood wax" on a Parquet floor
keeps the collor and finish very natural, perhaps you can use that

HG parquet & wood wax naturel

HG parquet & wood wax natural protects unvarnished parquet floors against dirt and stains. It also provides a rich shine which deepens the structure of the wood. Apply and rub in HG parquet wax natural thinly and evenly. Buff to a shine after it has dried. One litre is enough for a surface area of between 30 to 50 m².

how much have you been quoted for the transport ?

Peters and May quoted 38K euro, for a transport from Rome to Antwerp, 70ft 50T
Transport Partners in Holland quoted 35K

both are all inclusive, ex tax,
quite steep, expected 25K..., can do a lot of work in the med for the price of two transportations !?

About the same Bart. 39k euro +vat for 78x19 feet, 54tonnes, Southampton to Genoa. I think the main shipper is sevenstar, and everyone is a booking agent for them, so the prices are similar whichever company you use.

The service quality is not identical though. I like the P+M service because they supply cradles and their surveyor supervises and puts padding on the boat to stop it being chafed by the tie-down straps

Yes, it hardly makes sense to ship a canados70 twice. Better to do the work in the Med

Hey John,

Really interesting stuff abouts the stabs.. Nice to hear from a real person testing them as opposed to a sales guy telling you how great they are.

I was once told while on board a 78 that it doesn't suffer from wind because its too big LOL

Mmmmm not to sure about that ;-)

I'm still planning on taking my squad 58 down to mallorca and will most likely visit SOF, would love to see your boat.

Mine would be a wee baby beside yours :-)

Just a minor update as I was on the boat yesterday. There is/has been loads going on, and lots of minor fixes/tweaks have been done, plus a full re-carpet following the boatshow. Tender has been installed on teak chocks (though it's stored indoors, not on pic below), new flybridge table has been fitted to replace the one on the boat at LIBS (which wasn't up to scratch!), and covers have been made for everything. All looking very nice, and ready for handover this week, after which I'm hopng to drive her to Essex Boatyards next weekend where she will be A Glazed ready for the med sun

Weahter has been lousy so I don't have many pics. I will try to get more this week if the sun manages to come out. Here are some, just of the name (which nicely looks dark or light depending on how it catches the light in the sky) and the aft deck sofa which now has those too-boxy arms replaced by these ones with 45degree angles

John,

I hope the weather picks up for you this week, as it has been horrible. Match is looking really good, although I'm not 100% sure about the cockpit sofa arms. I could see myself doing something nasty on their hard edges, but I am known for clumsiness.

Anyway, looking forward to more pics.

Interesting to see Match near another boat with the standard (lower) stanchions under the teak rails.
In FL boots, I would not have any doubt about which to adopt for the future.
Yours is equally elegant, and MUCH better from a funtional viewpoint.
Besides, surely the somewhat higher cost for a few additional kgs of s/steel wouldn't scare the potential customers... :)

Yes Mapis, they are loads better raised a bit. Actually there are two benefits. The first is that it just feels right/safe, whereas the standard height feels too low. Second, it affects the furniture. On standard sq78 the teak rail is attached to the crew door so it comes forward when the door is opened. See pic below. This is a pretty stupid bit of design because it totally kills your chance of a sofa across the transom (which is an essential part of boating imho!). Fairline even supply a sofa as an option (but it's not that nice) and when you sit on it you get whacked in the back if the crew door opens. Doh! Because of the geometry you cannot "bridge" the teak across the crew door with the standard capping rail height. But if you raise the rails 50 or 75mm, you can bridge the teak so that the teak doesn't move when the crew door moves, and that allows a sofa like mine

Thing is, my mod makes the build process slightly cheaper. It has two stanchions fewer (the ones on the crew door) and the forward 50mm dia pulpit section is shorter where it comes down to meet the teak, so the overall s/s kg is the same. As for the teak, the transom piece is one piece on my boat instead of three sections, so less labour installing it and lining it up. They should just change all future boats to the set up on my boat :-)

She is looking mighty fine ..... Is she in EBY just now ? I'm down there tomorrow ! :D

No, will just miss you, what a pity. It's in Ipswich still, and plan is to drive it to Essex next Saturday 5th March. I was at Essex Friday; your boat is looking good. You must be getting excited about imminent delivery?

I didn't think I had a pic of the name at night but it turns out my son took one on his iPhone just as we were leaving so here it is. The red light bottom right corner is relfection off iPhone I think

...
Now, that's clever! I didn't notice it.
But actually, I also thought of a second advantage (third by now!) while looking at the pics, though I didn't mention it in the previous post: maintenance.
I mean, judging by the pics I would expect both cleaning of stanchions and repainting of the bottom part of the teak rails to be easier, with more space in between. Wadduthink, does that make sense?

Yes, for sure. Especially if one chooses to varnish the wood - more room for the brush. (I'm going to try teak oil at first and see how it goes)

Yep sorry, varnishing is what I actually meant by painting, of course.
Knowing your attention to detail, I'd rather forget oil, because I think you'll soon be disappointed.
And I think it's much easier to prepare the teak for varnishing if it has never been treated with oil.
That said, I'd also consider to keep them natural, and just clean them in the same way as the deck.

That is a stunning effect at night, well worth all the effort and thought.

Is there anything on the boat you would change if you had the chance to do it all again?

Nothing major at all. About a dozen tiny things, all of which I'll retro-do over the next year or so. Given that I do not want to go above 24m LLL, it's my perfect boat :-)

hi jfm

sorry havent been on in ages. computer hardrive decided to die!

looking great as usual! the name lit is simply STUNNING!!!!! (although the iphone doesnt have a red light so must be a street light or something)

any ideas on a date for departure? the plane is currently in 'maintinance' so hope its not too soon!

JR, from memory i think they are 130mm high and the whole thing is 1350 long. Though remember that font is very flat, ie the 130mm is a small dimension compared with the 1250

They are from www.yachtlite.com which is widely regarded by yachtbuilders as the best. There is s design generator on the site. The font is ferdi on page 3, though the m is custom cut because the standard ferdi m is too narrow imho when placed next to an a. This font is also known as porsha 911 eg on the funkymonkey names website

Colour is cold white. Imho cold looks better than warm in this application. My side deck lighting is also cold white

Yup I'm totally happy with them. Very nicely made. Mind you, at £3k they should be. Costwise, it makes sense to choose a short name!

I've just arrived at Ipswich for 3 days on the boat so I'll post some more pics soon
