Boat in build pics (Squadron 78)

John
Lovely to see the final conclusion to your first showing some 9 months ago. Any idea as to the the number of Unique selling points you could use if and when you sell Match. Is there one that you would say is the best.
David

Yup it's nice to get to the conclusion - she was handed over to me this week and I even have a key in my pocket now, wehey. Actually I'm not quite at conclusion - I think that will be after the shipping and she is in her home berth in France, in less than a month I hope.

The number of upgrades probably runs to 100 items but many are small and wouldn't make a whole pile of difference if selling her. The main ones if selling would undoubtedly be the fin stabs, extra fuel tank and internal stairs. These are major items, and totally not retrofittable. They didn't cost enough to need to increase the seling price much, so they will just make her easier to sell I think.

Once you get past those major items there is a long list including twin/double slide convert guest cabin, much nicer master cabin in square not curved contemporary style, the longer passerelle which is pretty significant to a Med buyer, substantial fireproofing upgrades incl automatic e/r vent closing, etc.

Anyway, no plans to sell currently :-)

You moved from Ipswich now John ?

We were anchored just of Frinton Saturday when we saw a largish looking mobo heading our way, SWMBO said "that looks big", "looks like a Fairline" said I, "Pass the bins".

Couldn't read the name (bit rolly in the swell), but how many large Fairlines are in the area with a sailing tender on the roof and a rib on the bathing platform ? :)

Managed one blurry pic, by the time SWMBO had got the camera, realised the battery was flat after the first, there wasn't time to change the battery before you were too far away lol.

I'm just not sure about the auto stanchions only. My personal preference would be auto on one side (stbd, in this case), with the option of removable ones on the other side. Not the most elegant solution maybe, but very convenient.

I want to learn about stanchions, pls explain ?
is it just to have the best of both worlds;
-the automatic; immediatly in place
-the removable; more solid
??
and why the auto on stbd ?

John,

Now that the keys are finally in your hot and sticky's, I hope you have a fantastic time with Match, and look forward to seeing some pics of her in her home berth in a few weeks.

Thanks again for this brilliant thread, it has kept a huge ammount of interest from the forum, and you have handled some interesting, challenging, and idiotic questions with great patience.

Ah, i saw same model as your boat anchored and wondered if it was you. Not sure where Frinton is but it was a few miles after we had turned south on exiting the Orwell river. You would have seen our starboard side as we passed, right, and we could see your starboard side? 11am ish, not exactly sure.

Anyway, it was a nice morning weatherwise I thought. We got to Essex Marina perfectly well (it's not a major voyage!), and she is berthed there till next weekend, being A Glazed among other things :-)

Yes, that was us. Was a nice morning, but got a bit foggy later in the day.

Well, auto on stbd is just because that's the most exposed side when the passerelle is on stbd (as in Match), and vice versa.
Correspondingly, this allows an easier access to the platform or the RIB on the inner side.
Also, you surely don't want autos on both sides, because that would be very unpractical when boarding with bags, equipment, etc. In fact, coming to think of it, I've never seen a passerelle with autos on both sides.
Otoh, autos have two inherent flaws: they require the passerelle to be fully extended (which sometimes might be undesired or even impossible) to operate properly, and when boarding they don't allow you to grab the line and/or the first stanchion before making the first step on the passerelle (which can be a concern for someone - particularly elderly people).
So, from both functionality and safety viewpoint, removable stanchions on both sides is the best and more flexible solution, allowing the crew to choose any combination, including no stanchions at all. It's not by chance that you will see this solution in most professionally crewed megayachts.
But autos are easier and quicker to deal with, and more than good enough for most occasions, so it makes sense to have them on one side, and let them work for you.
For the odd occasions where your guests appreciate a safer feeling, you can still fit the removable ones on the other side.
The reason why I said that this is "not the most elegant solution" is simply because autos and vertical don't mix well from an aesthetic viewpoint... Not that I'd be so worried about that, unless maybe on a Royal Huisman or summink! :)

Hi JFM

I have been off line for sometime. Just caught up with your thread. Finished article looks great.

Good to see you got the longer passarelle with auto folding (;-) I know someone else who wished they had done that!!! How springy is the passarelle with that extra metre?

Your photos look fab you must be very pleased.

Regards from a wet Marbella.

going cold turkey here John :D

I guess Match must be either down in Antibes, or on her way?

Nope, she's hanging around waiting for the ship Chris. Still in Essex marina. The Peters + May ship gets later and later each time they update me and is currently "approx end of March". I need Match in Antibes by Easter so I'm beginning to worry about the ship timing. The ships calls in at Gib, Gandia, Palma then Gib, and spends about 1.5 days in each, so while my original plan was/is to go unload in Genoa I can save a few days off the overall trip by unloading in Palma or even Gib and driving it to Antibes on own bottom

The hanging around time in Essex has been put to good use: converting blanked off spaces into cupboards, installing a Tecma loo in the crew cabin, A Glaze, having some s/s bits made by JB welding (resident s/s welder guy in Essex who does great work at 1/4 of SofF prices) various odd jobs and small bits of snagging. Also I went for a blast up the river Crouch on Saturday in the tender and it went really well; 4.1m tender with 50hp felt like a proper boat compared with my earlier 3-3.3m tenders and that Yam50 engine is incedibly smooth and quiet.

When it finally goes to Southampton and on the ship I'll post some pics

Hi Lozzer. Hope sun has come out by now

Longer passerelle is great, and doesn't feel any springier than the standard one, so it's a definite hit. It was quite a tricky installation as they had to make the box longer so it goes right up to the engine room bulkhead but they did a really need job on all that

That water pump is noisy, as you warned me. I'm going to ask Elessar off this forum to make me a lead blanket, when I've taken some dimensions. Otherwise all ok

What are your plans for summer?

You know that I had a quotation on the trasportation of a Canados 70 to Antwerp.
Last week I was contacted by "Straclass" they asked if I was going to do this transport, when I told them that I won't because the prices are more than I thought, he came back to me telling that they could make a "big" reduction if I was going to use the transport leaving Genoa on 30 april !
They have asked me to propose a price I have in mind,
So even these trasport prices are negociable...I'm not going to use it anyway.

it's probably the same boat that will bring Match, date might be a bit worrying for you, I have no more info.

The date is indeed worrying Bart! Who are Straclass? The shipping company i am using is www.sevenstar.nl, throught their booking agent www.petersandmay.com. The Sevenstar ships from Southampton down to Genoa normally continue south/est to Split and turkey. See sailing schedules on this page, though it is worrying that there is no end of march sailing! http://www.sevenstar.nl/Index.aspx?pgeId=183

I think northbound sailings Med-N Europe are much more price-flexible at this time of year

jfm

Well, look on the bright side.
If you do have to do the run from Gib on her own bottom, you could always join the forum fleet as we cross the Bay of Lions :).

Let's hope we will all be raising a glass to Match in Antibes at Easter.

Oh Good! Pleased you like it. The engine is so quiet when I launch mine from the versadock I nearly always go for the key as I hit the water as i think I have stalled it..

Its a good boat at speed and grippy for manouvering I have found.

i think tcm had an issue with sevenseas i seem to recall????

Yup, very nice boat. Gets over the hump and onto the plane very nicely, with no long period of bows in the air

TCM did indeed fall out with sevenstar. They were very late, which is what might now be happening to me. Difference is, I have negotiated a get out clause under which I walk away for nil cost if the ship doesn't depart by end March, and I have not paid them a penny yet

Bart, do you have contact info for starclass? Their website is terrible. They seem to use ships other than sevenstar (judging from pictures) which might give me more choice
