Boat in build pics (Squadron 78)

Bart, do you have contact info for starclass? Their website is terrible. They seem to use ships other than sevenstar (judging from pictures) which might give me more choice

they are commercial organisations, so I don't think they care that I put this info on an open forum:

http://www.transportpartners.com/

Inge Valk [inge@transportpartners.com]

starclass [info@starclassyachttransport.com]

I had the quotation from transportpartners, and they placed starclass in CC in most of the e-mails, then last week, I got e-mails directly from Jan at starclass

TCM did indeed fall out with sevenstar. They were very late, which is what might now be happening to me. Difference is, I have negotiated a get out clause under which I walk away for nil cost if the ship doesn't depart by end March, and I have not paid them a penny yet

Good move, there seems to be a consistent theme of boat moving ships running late.

What a result it was that Matt was let down...we had a blast.

Is going the whole way on her bottom not an option?

With Matt's boat it was 60 hrs from Villamoura to Port Solent inc 3 fuel stops.

Solent-Vilamoura is exactly 50% of Solent-Antibes. Matt's boat was already in Gib at the time, remember. Own bottom is an option, and I have 2x range of the Leopard at any given speed so fuel stops less hassle. But 2000nm and no time to stop off is a drive-you-nuts journey imho and I'd much prefer to stick it on a ship, at least to Palma which leaves me 400nm to Antibes

If you don't get Match in Antibes in time, and you're in desperate need of a boat,
you can borrow my Canados 70s "Bleu Angel" :)
I wont be using her then, as I'm in Maldives at Easter

Just for the record
We did Gib to Sant Carles in JW in two days - fuel stop at Cartegena (need a tanker supply though). That was cruising at 25 knots. Recent trip with John in an F43 took an extra day due to shorter range but still cruising mostly at 22/25 knots.
I recon Sant Carles to Antibes is about 350 miles - probably another 2 days but may take longer to cross the bay.

But I'm sure you know all this

I guess there are only a few companies that move boats and due to the small number of these ocean going ships once a delay occurs (Wx or berth not free, techn issue etc) once the sched is buggared it cannot be made up and hence the slippage.

You would have thought however that with their experience now that a more realistic sched could be offered rather this somewhat mish mash for ETA's.

And Hurric is, iirc, the current holder of the forum blue riband for UK-Spain. Not, of course, that that will sway your judgment, jfm...:D

You stirrer, BJB :D:D:D I'd be quite happy to do gauntletting if it could be over and done with in an afternoon, as per the original concept. This particular gantlet however is 8 days or whatever ar 250nm per day, jeeze. Motorboating is like cream cakes: if you offer me as nice chocolate eclair and a cup of tea I'll say yes please of course, and enjoy it very much. I might even have 2 eclairs. But if I've had 7 and you offer me an 8th, I'd run a mile. So it is with 250nm boating days, imho (and I wouldn't have time to stop off and visit places en route cos the boat has to be in Antibes ready for guests at Easter, exactly a month from today)

Separately, and OT, thanks very much for the book and it is in a box ready to be unpacked as Match's library. Very kind of you. I'm intrigued by Lynne Truss and Eats, Shoots & Leaves. What is her authority for what she writes? I'd love to see the support/evidence for her claim that non-apostrophe-ed abbreviations is "quite recent" and of "recent years". When I find time I'll dig deeper...

Fowler's Modern English Usage, vide Curtailed Words, -ed, 'd.

Just the sort of articles for forgetting about how to move Match against a strict deadline to the Med... :)

I don't have a paper copy to hand and have only this online version. I can't find his chapter on curtailed words. Please can you point me to the relevant part?

Edit - my link goes to King's English, not Modern English Usage

Yup, strict deadlines are not too clever an idea where boats are concerned :)

Teehee, I think that your plan for shipping followed by cruising rather than a succession of endurance runs is spot on.

Re the Lynne Truss, I was just flipping through the book a couple of weeks ago and remembered swapping posts about apostrophes. It made me smile so I posted it on. Perhaps it will find a resting place in one of the bathrooms onboard.

Hi JFM

Summer isn't sorted yet still looking for work if you hear of anyone looking for a skipper.

willing to go anywhere except Libya.

That pump was a pain in the arse, not sure if a lead jacket will fix it. If I recall in the end we had to replace the accumulator tank. It was a proper buggers mess, had to cut away bed base in order to get it out. After that it was SO much better, you might want to check before you lose any sleep, take it from someone that knows.

If you stop off at Gib do let me know, or if you need any help always willing.

Did you get a solution to the port side alternator, if not make sure you have some spare relays, might have a photo somewhere for you. as an emergency you can always use the cross over before you lose the engine.

JFM

Dont want to make you any more nervous but they were 3 weeks late for me last year. Everyday was a different story. Oh we will put you on this ship or that ship. In the end they we just sat and waited and waited. We could have saved money and time getting there under own steam but as you say long days and you have to get the weather window.

Good luck with it all, I will keep my fingers crossed for you.

Thanks Lozzer. Best of luck on the work front and yes if I come across anything I will let you know or pass on your details

The accumulator wasn't right on my pump and it all got redone yesterday and now the accumulator does a lot of the work and the pump doesn't start until a tap has been running quite a while. I gave it a good test last night. Much better; I'm v happy with it now. Mind you, my pump is easily accessible via a door under the sink; your awkward access was due to the gyro stabs. Fin stabs are the future on 80ers :-)

I haven't looked into the port alternator yet but in any case I have had the boat wired differently so the generators charge the engine batteries; not just the engines themselves, which gives me a degree of backup. I will check out the alternators though and buy a few relays

Thnaks for offer of help. I am in that same position as you were where shipping companies give me dates but I'm not convinced they are being candid. I have two "promised" sailings, P+M and PSP, both of which get my boat there in time, and i have to decide now which one I believe more than the other... Exactly same happend to s78-66, the one after yours, and which you were berthed opposite in Antibes last summer. They ended up driving the boat Southampton Antibes to make it in time for the owner's holiday. I have no idea if they got a refund of the 40grand shipping fee...

Which shipping company was that Lozzer?
