I would guess that the damage or technical failure happened before they got swept into there.

Yeah, didn't seem to have any engine power. Just drifting. With engines running would have seemed a trivial job to reverse it out, or just not go in there in the first place.

Clearly we don’t know the detail, but it has been suggested they lost engine power.
But it does remind one of the old saying that a vessel should never go ashore with an anchor still on the bow. Not sure if dropping an anchor immediately would have saved it, but if done early enough might have helped?
