I don't know how many have done RYA shorebased courses at Chichester, but if you have over the past 25 years or so chances are that Bill was your instructor. I did YM theory with him back in 82. He's finally called it a day. I understand that he'd moved to Lyme Regis some years ago, but recently had problems arranging local accommodation for the 3 nights a week he taught.

Best wishes to him.

I was in his class (Yachtmaster Ocean) last night when he announced that it would be his last tutorial. He has been teaching Dayskipper/Yachtmaster/Ocean three nights a week at Chichester for 27 years. (which equates to approx 1000 students) I wish him well in his well deserved retirement. I will miss his practical approach and clear explanations.

I did Yachtmaster Ocean with Bill's class about seven years ago. My enduring recollection is how, after taking us through yet another fiendish wrestling match with reducing sights of unlikely heavenly bodies, he would say "Piece of cake!" and break into a broad grin. Great teacher and great character - thanks Bill!

He took over our Ocean course from Ken Keeling, a retired master mariner and a hard act to follow. Practical gems such as if you find yourself in the dangerous quadrant of a tropical revolving storm strap yourself into your bunk with a bottle of whisky and hope it's gone when you come to!

Bill clearly enjoyed teaching and I believe he only took 2 days off in all the years he taught. Smashing chap who would freely hand out his home phone number in case anyone struggled with their homework. There should be an award for people like Bill.
