Hi there - my first post on this forum! Pleased to meet you all. I'm new to yachting and am trying to get a feel for the best places visit around the UK for yachting races etc. I know it's beginner's stuff, but what are the five biggest events in the UK yachting calender?

There's also Burnham week, in August if I recall, and various rallies such as the Old Gaffers. One place to start is the sailing magazines, which have a section advertising upcoming events.

Dave,
It is good to see your mention of Burnham.
We are only a small Club on the Bristol Channel, but do welcome visitors onto our newly installed pontooms and run regular weekend races, although we have not stretched as far as a full week yet. I hear there is a club on the East Coast that also does some sailing ?
We have an active Cruising section and an interesting (challenging ?) area of water to sail in.
Best Wishes,
Ken

Typical sailing season in the UK for most is Easter time until about November. When people have there boats out for the winter months, to antifoul (paint the bottom) and to dry the hull out a bit.

Quite a few people sail all through winter as you can get some great winter days for sailing during this period. Lots of racing too winter series / frost bite series of racing starts for lots of YC.

Major regattas in the UK are normally in summer months.

Sadly I've not had the pleasure of visiting your Burnham, but from what I remember of the Bristol Channel there's just as many mudbanks per square foot, and something of a fierce tide as well. I'm sure I'd feel at home.

Five biggest events?
1. The bill for the coming years mooring
2. Chandlers bill for all the repairs and upgrades
3. Launching (heartstopper)
4. First Sail of the Year
5. First Anchorage/Meal/Wine of the Year

All these are approx April based, but none of them are April Fool! Many more following that, hopefully pleasant.
