Were you on the runway side? Loooong walk. Used to be much cheaper. Sad how that marina has faded to nearly dead. :(

Yes, runway side. There’s still much work going on and I can’t say I’m in favour of all the development and certainly not that eyesore of cruise ship or what they’ve done to Marina Bay but, the pontoons were good, there was little noise and the staff and facilities were really good.

However…. I miss the days when Gib’ was a real cruising crossroads and when Sheppards still had the yard. Nostalgia’s not what it used to be!

Haslar has just installed some new pods which are self contained units -it doesn’t have the luxury of an enclosed hallway like hamble point but the pods themselves a marked improvement and usefully on the pontoon not ashore. Lymington yacht haven and Berthon both worth a commendation plus those at ocean village Soton ok if a walk.
They aren’t fancy though, and for reasons known only to themselves they segregated them by sex which baffles me every time. There’s certainly nothing I can find in the gents that requires a penis to operate…

Big shame We lived onboard and ran our business from Marina Bay over a lot of years. The Sunborn arrival was the beginning of the end for us so we moved on.

Took a visit back a couple of months ago to catch up with old friends. Knew what to ecpect but a good reminder of why we left. Actually had 2 nights on Sunborn......interesting!

Hamble Point was pretty good, though I’ve not been there for maybe eight or ten years. Individual shower/loo cubicles of generous size. I must say that the old showers in Ramsgate under the arches were impressive, basically unisex but with a concierge chappie.

I can't see any sense in cubicles containing a shower, lavatory and washbasin. It causes queues as people wanting a shower are held up waiting while someone has a shave or a crap.
Yup, and often an upgrade results in the incorporation of designer nik naks such as heated seats & unnecessarily large circulation spaces (not related to disabled access..) and a reduction the number of actual facilities, all so it looks better in the brochure...

Actually it reduces queuing since the total number remains the same but people can finish faster with everything in one contained bathroom. Never had to queue in a modern facility, quite often have in old cublicle style ones. Add to this the benefit of unisex so none are wasted and empty while queues form…

The olympic games marina in Portland was real nice when we were there, I guess in 2016. No posh marble nonsense like in Plymouth, just well designed, clean, well ventilated and with space for putting your stuff. There were even hairdryers, not that I would need one. I hope they kept the place in good shape.

The other one I liked was in Muxia in the Galician Rias. There was a single shower, with a plastic curtain and the floor basin was standing on an old cargo pallet. But the marina cost 9€ per night and for that the facilities were great and totally sufficient! ;)

Tarbert, Loch Fyne. Modern, immaculately clean, plenty of showers and cubicles and no extra charge. They include a squeegee in each shower cubicle so you can dry the floor.

Best facilities are usually found on the boat, a holding tank for anything you'd not want to see floating around the marina and a clean shower.

They are identical to the East Cowes ones with Cabrillant glass cubicles, but obviously a lot more of them. We were there a couple of weeks ago and they are showing the same signs of deterioration as East Cowes, mostly mould on sealant and grout. Nothing some bleach wouldn't sort out, and better than most marinas. Over the couple of months on board this summer there were very few being cleaned well enough, and some (Port Hamble for instance) smelled like a grotty park toilet, again nothing a bit of bleach wouldn't sort out. The brand new Haslar ones aleady have staining on the floor and several broken fittings. It seems maintenance is harder than wow factor, perhaps we need a thread to rate the toilet cleaners ?

They used to have unisex showers at lymington yacht but seems they removed them and went back to segregated blocks. At Haslar there are some he/she pods for those who care and the actual pods are large enough for couples/ family units I guess if the need arises .

Visiting here at the moment, they are fine but not the best I have visited on my trip. The best so far is Belfast Marina. They were huge with everything in there including a hair dryer, and separate drying area away from the shower with plenty of hooks and a short bench.

MDL Chatham. ST KATS Marina and some while ago the bogs in Chelsea Yacht Harbour.
The bogs in Limehouse have been praised in Limehouse by members of the crew.

Muxia's upgraded now - there's a whole portacabin full of showers, perhaps 6 of them, but the cubicles seem to have been have been bought from a PVC door and window saleroom demonstrating as many different door and window styles as possible, while the fittings seem to be transposed direct from a bathroom showroom. The on I used had three different mirrors. The pallet's still there though!
