When the AD41 was launched I would imagine the requirement was for a good quality 15w40 mineral oil. It may have had a Volvo spec, but personally I would be happy to use any quality oil of the right viscosity.

The owners manual dated 1998 states: VDS or CD 15W40

So anything that meets that is good enough, then you just need to decide if newer oils, such as VDS3 or later C spec is going to offer any benefit. I have an AD31, so the same basic engine less 2 cylinders, and use one of the many non-volvo branded oils that meets VDS2 or 3 specs and is 15W40.

Hi,

In my opinion he asked for the best oil and usually the new oils are more advanced, reduce the glazing of cylinder tubes, wash carbon, corrosion additive, prevent air bubbles in oil, TNB add-on. You are absolutely right to pay more when you can well use VDS2 grade oil. Oil business is strongly about the marketing of various brands, fortunately, these ratings have been made to facilitate the user.

I do agree that new oils are more advanced, but that doesn't always make them better for an older application. A modern synthetic oil used in an old engine that is used to mineral oils can cause oil leaks, for example.

I cruise around 3300rpm for most sea runs so whick oil is the best option for vp tmd41 engines?
The vds3 stuff is fully synthetic and almost seems to good for such an agricultural engine.
No it isn’t VDS 3 is 15/40 mineral oil, no Volvopenta diesel runs on synthetic oil of any type.

Use either a motor factor oil ,or if available, branded oil on offer via ebay, that meets the Volvo specs for 40/41 engines.
Pay around £50.00 per 20 litres. All my filters are branded motor factor as well.

Complete DIY oil change for two engines with filters. £120.00.Get oil red hot and use cheapo electric oil pump direct via extraction pipe into spare drum.Slow but clean and simple method of getting oil out.
Forget antediluvian vacuum pumps. :)

There is some genuine Volvo Penta 20L oil VD4 doing the rounds at £25.00 per 20L drum.:)
