Best 32' bluewater sailboat - up to 14.000 pounds budget

Thank you Mac and George (Gnjoutside) :)

Most likelly if Mac's boat (Rival 32) was located in the UK it would have been sold by now.

In support of Adrian I can confirm that his plan is wholly achievable.

Good luck Adrian!

Well with due respect I do have to point out that since you haven't put your boat in the water let alone sailed it into a serious sea, I'm not sure you have confirmed the plan or achieved the aims he is setting out. What you have done (playing devils advocate) is confirm that you can buy an old boat and spend an age fettling it on the hard. There is a lot of that about though!

I agree that a boat can be bought and slowly done up to a good standard over time for the sort of money he is talking about. A season or two on the hard followed by a season shaking it down inshore and so on and so on. This is called a project. But I thought he wanted to get a boat at this price and go. He wasn't so much talking in project terms. Happy to be wrong of course.

Anyway I wish you both the best of luck, I don't mean to knock what you guys are doing.

Cheers

Hello Bitbaltic,

I concede that I've yet to make a major passage, but on a forty mile hop everything worked well and the survey was surprisingly clean for a 30 year old grp build.

She is certainly not a project, although of course the test will be the first force six beat!

Adrian does seem to be going about this the right way, and there is a consensus on the thread that it can be done with time and care.

Yes forgive me. I am/was looking at it from a different perspective. In the Bristol Channel *everything* is a F6 beat. So I have tended to spec my boat up from that perspective as I'd rather sail in rougher weather than not sail at all. I was just exploring what the OPs fallback position was if that first beat threw up big issues. As far as I could see he might have been proposing to do it in Biscay rather than somewhere coastal. I guess I was wrong to assume his timeframe did not seem to include a longish coastal shakedown or the incremental budget to work with that.

Apologies and best wishes to you both :)

Thank you Paul, but this is quite the opposite to what I'm looking for :)

However I found another very interesting boat.

I have to say that this broker impressed me, he's not just taking money for listing some web ads. The video is really helpful, at least to figure out if your wife won't cut your throat because you dragged her across the continent to see the boat :D

I think the OPs plan is doable. I bought my boat off someone who was planning a cruise to the baltic but lost his health.

It was basic but ready to go if a bit manky with peeling varnish and old cushions.

They are out there and I disagree that you have to spend a fortune on any boat you buy before you can go cruising. Some people actually look after their boats and they are for sale in this depressed market.

we have seen a few listed here already that you could probably head off in and sort on the way.

Nice boats the Elizabethans, keep us informed of how you get on and what you go for.
Good luck.

didn't they have an 'interesting' history in the 79 Fasnet though?

Not sure of there history in the 79 Fastnet, several of my friends have them and swear by them, slightly of track, i used to own a Golden Shamrock, built for the fastnet, what a lovely boat that was, wish i had never sold it.

A mate of mine, who was on an Elizabethan 33 in that race, still well remembers being in the water & grabbing a washboard as it went past. Only the Contessa 32 got a good report after that disaster, with many other designs, including the Sigma 33 getting a pasting afterward IIRC.

I think I found another possible winner :)

This Nic32 is equipped for bluewater cuising and I have the distinct feeling that my budget isn't going to be too small considering the yacht's location.

However, I have to consider the cost of taking my family (and all the luggage) to Panama. Overall this is one of the top 3 boats so far, clearly.

If your going that far, try this one,http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/35-Morgan-Sailboat-/261126628857?pt=Sailboats&hash=item3ccc5c25f9

Yup, not to mention the inventory is virtually non-existent. :) However the boat might sell for peanuts, but it would be too much trouble to get it ready to go, at least for someone based in Europe like me.

On the other hand, the above mentioned Nic 32 comes fully loaded. :) I think it might have even figured out a way to get to Panama real cheap :D .

Given that the boat is in panama and the cost of flying luggage there is a concern. Are you going to be able to do what GNJoutside suggests (take time if necessary) or will the cost of going to see it mean that, if nothing untowards comes up on survey, you will shortly be sailing it for Europe, or elsewhere?

I don't think it would be reasonale to go on a passage right after purchasing a boat, regardless how good it is. I wouldn't do that even if I had relevant experience on another Nic32 (which I don't).

If I get to buy this boat I'll probably cruise it in the nearby area for the next season.

+1 :)

Ok then we definitely see eye to eye. Good luck and fair winds! Will look forward to regular updates whatever boat you get.

Cheers
