Best 32' bluewater sailboat - up to 14.000 pounds budget

Westerly

Many WESTERly yachts large and small have crossed the atlantic, my longbow 31 1978 model
down to the Med: same model round the UK/Scotland no short cut.

Boats/yachts well maintained and fitted new replacements, never reach their use by date.

need say no more, except arm chair sailors need to get on their feet.

MH32

Hi Adrian. I might have missed it but I can not see which area you are in. I have a MH32E up in liverpool that you are welcome to have a look round, better than shopping blind. Not for sale as I have only owned her a few months myself.
Cheers Smudge

That is a VERY low price for a Moody 31 Mk II. In fact, it's so low that I'd ask what's wrong with them!
Won't be anything particularly wrong with it. Just will have spent its whole life, 20+ weeks a year in the hands of novice crews. It is located in a place where there is little demand for this type of boat (too old and small) and not enough margin to bring it back to UK where it might get a higher price.

Beneteau Evasion 32? Neptune 33?

I've seen a few Evasion 32 coming close to my budget during the last 2 months, but I really don't see myself singlehandling that boat. I might be wrong, as I have almost no experience with a ketch.

Thanks a lot Smudge, I really appreciate it, but I'm not even in the UK :) However I really need to share from your experience if I am to buy one of these, can I bother you for some details by PM?

You might get this Centurion 32 for your budget if you like CO32 type things.

CO32 type thing, but a much more comfortable cruising yacht. Not as wet upwind and less twitchy downwind. A true bluewater yacht with many extended voyages to her credit. Also an excellent cockpit. The original engine(MD2B) will probably have been replaced by now but if not will be a worrying proposition. The Centurion 32 is a much underated yacht because so few come on the market so they are not well known. Very well built by Wauquiez, designed by Kim Holman. We had ours for 16 years and sailed many miles, including around Great Britain, to the Baltic twice etc.etc.
I am 6ft and didn't find her too small.

They have several to sell, probably all a bit tired, and its a buyers market out there. If I wanted one I would start the bidding way below asking price.

Well one has just sold and it's on its way to Israel, just wish we were a bit closer.

Pete

I must confess that if I was living in Dunoon I'd be all over this boat, especially since I somehow have the feeling that the yard would let it go quite cheap. (much lower then current asking price, given the circumstances) But I don't think it's reasonale to purchase a project boat and have it shipped (or try to fix the major problems in situ) when you're on a tight budget.

That looks like a competent boat and the 2004 Yanmar appears well maintained, even if this isn't an indicator of the running hours. Inventory is on the poor side, which might be the sign of an owner moving to another boat (for various reasons). But they mentioned that they are entertaining offers so a good price drop is possible.
Tnanks a lot, I think I'll put this one on the short list :) .

For someone who doesn't mind having a shoal keel (which is indeed well suited for sailing in Greece) one of these could be a good buy, particullary since you have where to choose from.

Being chartered boats I expect the inventory to be minimal and engine hours very high. For a person who is set on a Moody 31 this lot is clearly worth looking at.

Similar size to Albin ballad, elizabethan 30 may fit your bill and will be in better condition at the price point.

One in good looking condition on Boatshed located on east coast of UK for 13k which would allow a few pounds for some tidying or a liferaft

another over budget (£17k) on Appollo Duck but located in Arisaig has full offshore inventory including windvane and is ready to go. Arisaig is handy for teh caledonian canal and back home for you -Try a punt

would be an ideal singlehanders offshore yacht

I really like the looks of the Rival 34 and a deep keel version would probably be a great choice for my intended purpose, but I'd probably have to twist someone's arm really bad (so to speak :) ) in order to buy a decent one for 14.000.

As for the Elizabethan 30, it appears I need to gather some knowledge on it, since it seems to navigate close to my price range, so to speak. :)

Challenger 32 in Levington.

I've had my eye on this for a while, been for sale quite a while, it might be just what you're looking for...

I've had a look at her back in January and the space on board is fantastic, but she's not tip top and I could have sunk hours of work into her!

It would be worth asking the broker for a copy of a recent survey before making the trip down to see her.

Have a look at yachtsalesgreece.com, several boats on there for around your budget, some worth a cheeky bid as like the Jouet 37, the Amel Kirk etc, been for sale for over a year with no interest, most people want the moderns ones out here, i bought a Carter 33, with new engine, and very good sails for 12 grand, so there are bargans here.
Good luck.

That particular Challenger 32 is currently listed by the broker as

BOAT CURRENTLY UNDER RESTORATION due to be completed in October 2012.

I guess that someone found some serioul flaws in it.
However, can anyone comment on the Challenger 32 based on sailing experince? As it almost always happens, less known brands sell for very low prices if the owner has to part with them on the wrong side of the Atlantic. I've seen very strong and well equipped Albin or Marieholm boats sell for less then 10.000 dollars on various american sites. Unfortunatelly, since teleportation isn't yet a valid option... :)

I was checking it out extensivelly on Saturday, saw there a Moody 33 (asking price 21.000) that looked pretty good, but already found a few cheaper MK I's in the UK. The Jouet doesn't look bad a all but I don't want to insult people by offering 14000 on a boat offered for 35000 :) The Amel is advertised as having "Hull professionally painted" but in the photo the paintjob looks horrific (maybe just water reflexions :) )
Anyway, I'm keeping an eye there too. But if I am to start shouting cheeky offers in Greek marinas I might as well start with this one :D

Paul, where are you located in Greece?

As for the Apollo, if I was planning to charter it and they would go for my offer that would be a lot of boat to buy for 14.000 :)
