Beneteau Swift Trawler 37 - new

I have friends who own a Beneteau Swift Trawler 35 and another friend who used to own a 34, so the new 37 has caught my eye. The new reverse rake windscreen is quite attractive though the additional flare of the bow does make the screen area look a little squeezed, like it's had a face lift.
What i am curious of is the overall size of the thing. Looking at the official Beneteau pages, the 35 has a LOA of 37ft. The 37 has a LOA of.....37ft. The 35 has a beam of 13'3" and the 37 is 13'1" and the max air draft is 18'1" for the 35 and 16'4" for the 37.. And the 37 is just 50kg heavier than the 35...

So they are identical lenghts, the older 35 is slightly wider and 1 1'2 ft higher and near as damn it they both displace the same.. Once you get past the "wow it's a new one" factor, is there really that much difference in the 37 over the 35?? Not as much as I'd have expected to be honest.

Will be worth a look. I'm going to try and get a look around the 37, but other than the obvious screen angle change, I think the numeric change from 35 to 37 may not be that significant.

I understand it’s the same hull as the 35… so the Ancasta sales guy told me.. Wondering if the switch from Cummins power to Yanmar power has something to do with US/ Europe tariffs vs Japan/Europe tariffs?

The issue to my mind currently with the trawlers is the current 41 version is too pricey and the 34/5 depending on year too small -there are some 44 for sale but that ramps up the berthing fees for not much more space (although the lifting crane/davit is a benefit) good luck in your searches though for 37.

As mentioned, it's the same hull, but there are some very useful and sensible layout changes.

The 34 had a screw on swim platform.....where as the newer models it’s molded into the hull. The hull length changes...but the overall length is more or less the same

Yeah I remember when the 35 was released I saw a quite in-depth feature on how different the 35 was from the 34. Having both a 34 and 35 moored within 100ft of me for a couple of years made that apparent..

I won't lie I'm a little disappointed that the 37 shares the same hull as the 35.. Maybe it's the going up by 2 numbers instead of 1, it implies a more significant change and space increase. It is a bit misleading.
So really what we have here is a new 35. It could be called a 35 mk2 or a 35 GT or something.

I’ve parked next to footy foot boats that were shorter than my 34 (36 with swim platform)....so boat names are misleading. The big news is that the 37 is a better boat than the 35....but it’s cheaper !....so expecting a new mold is asking a lot

Yeah lengths are misleading but from the same boat make and model, that's a bit rich. I'd expect if I bought a Fairline Targa 42 (just pulling a random model and number) and then they released a Fairline Targa 44 and it was the very same hull, I'd find that a bit misleading..

Whether it's better, cheaper, can walk on the moon, is irrelevant to the labelling.

Ps.. I know other brands have done this before but that doesn't excuse it.

I prefer to think of boat length as LWL, it tells you more about the actual hull length of the boat.

A pulpit and a hanging swim platform does not slow down hull speed.

An interesting random example, given that the Fairline Targa 48 became the Fairline Targa 50 with the same hull and exactly the same LOA, just like the Targa 43 became the Targa 45.

Meanwhile, amongst many many other examples, the Princess V48 became the V50 and the Sunseeker Manhattan 52 became the Manhattan 55, again, same hull, same LOA.

It's just a model designation that roughly relates to the boat's length, it's not the specification written on the side.

I agree with your point about the docking price.

personally I was thinking about the issue of buying a boat and comparing different boats, the hull measurement tells you the size of the boat and they have expensive legs vs a bolted swim platform

But taking a step back.... I have to say with the Swift Trawler's history, if we were in 35 land and a 37 appeared, considering the model history (34-35 etc) I would definitely expect a ft or two extra, rather than trying to wiggle the superstructure to squeeze more into the can.

The Swift Trawler 34/35 was a very successful 'pocket' trawler yacht so to my mind, it makes perfect sense to keep the same basic (and successful) dimensions and improve the layout (which they have done a great job of).

Bearing in mind that most boating costs (berthing, lifting, antifouling, etc etc) are based on length, if I wanted to keep to the same boat but upgrade to the newer model, I'd be absolutely delighted that they had made the boat usefully better without making it bigger or more expensive (indeed they've actually made it cheaper apparently!).

I suppose that if I wanted a bigger boat, I'd just buy a bigger boat...

I suppose that if I wanted a bigger boat, I'd just buy a bigger boat...

I think the point in hand is that to some, first impressions of the '37 the'd think they were buying a bigger boat.... But they're not.

You clearly have a chip on your shoulder about the boat labelling - but it is just that. And if anything you should be happy that the new model is correcting previous inaccuracies.
Most people would be more interested in what they get for their money (which seems a bit of a bargain this is case), and whether it fits in their berth constraints (physical and cost).
If you choose not to look at what sounds like a great boat, much improved over the previous model at a lower price, due to pique over lanes - then there is only one person losing out :—)

I think the ST37 looks fantastic.. finally got a proper shower cubicle instead of a wet room and loads of natural light with the roof hatches

I will buy one in about 20 years
