Anyone been to Bembridge recently?

Has the Baywatch reopened as a restaurant or is it still the lousy, overpriced, takeaway it has been for the past two years?

That’s not a particularly sympathetic way to put it, in view of the very difficult time the hospitality industry has endured since the start of the pandemic.

I belief nothing much has changed - I will be in Bembridge next week so will see for myself but if reports are to be believed what was once a valued eatery has been ruined in recent times. The interior is not open and it continues to offer limited fare in plastic cartoons outside and marked reluctance to provide umbrellas should it rain. It is fine for a drink I’m sure but don’t expect much more. If looking for cuisine and moored in Bembridge I would suggest either the old fort in Seaview by taxi (downstairs not up) or in St. Helens Ganders is worth a look or in Bembridge Foxes continues to provide quality meals if traditional style. Sadly crab and lobster in Bembridge has gone down recently -slow service and average food but if ryde is not too far the Duck by ryde boating lake continues to be popular and well booked up in advance. You might want to look at Cat and Mat reviews if looking for wider island dining.

I think that’s an understatement -while in the time of covid it’s plastic meals were tolerable clearly they have decided to continue to exploit their position with zero culinary skill.

You clearly have not visited over past two years. I have visited many restalientalurants who have managed to maintain standards throughout the pandemic. Your pathetic support will only encourage the owners to take the piss out of their cliental. I speak as of customer of more than 20 years standing.

Gosh. You are very aggressive aren’t you ?

I don’t know the restaurant in question, but I have owned and run pubs since 1995. I would like to think that my own establishment has maintained its standards despite all the difficulties of the last two years. As a long established business with no debt, where the freehold is paid for, I recognise that we did not have such a difficult time as many others in the industry.

Dare I say, that if you have an issue with a Restaurant, sharing your views with the management directly is a more productive thing to do than slagging them off on social media.

I look forward to your report after your visit. Was last in the Bembridge area last September and visied 6 hospitality venues. All but one were working well, had lots of customers and providing very good service. I would not go back to the Baywatch unless the management changes. Not mentioned by you above so will add that '33 St. Helens" was excellent.

I was there a couple of weeks ago. The restaurant is still shut. They are just serving through a hatch. I only had an ice cream so can't comment on the food. I was surprised that they hadn't re-opened the restaurant yet.

We were there on a hot summer day last year and it was jammed with families doing the beach thing and enjoying trays of chips, ice cream etc. wouldn’t be surprised if the finances of that vs having to employ waiting staff and chefs makes sense for them. As others have said, bad news if we want a convenient sit down meal. The sailing club opposite welcomes people, does reasonable food and extremely inexpensive drinks, worth supporting, about 20 mins walk across the causeway, take a torch.
Also went to crab and lobster last week. First time so can’t make a comparison with previous service but friendly at lunchtime, possibly a little slow and a bit pricy. £10 for a very nice doorstep crab sandwich with a bit of salad garnish.
