Being polite to stinkies

Being new to boating, It seems that there is a little bit of love hate relationship between yachting and powerboating, is this true, and what causes this? When I get my boat in a few weeks I want to be able to avoid any ugly confrontations, I need to know what to look out for and what to avoid.

Thanks,

No worries Grumpy. I,m dedicated raggie, But think you will find that there are as many arse holes* in raggie boats as in stinkies, Show everyone the consideration you would like them to show you and you won't go far wrong, Good luck with the new boat.
Fair winds, ooops! Clean fuel????
Mick.

* Is arse holes allowed??( don't wanna get Kimmerised)

First change your name from GRUMPY /forums/images/icons/frown.gif to HAPPY /forums/images/icons/smile.gif.

The phenomenon is boatism, with stereotypes being what you are judged by even before you open your mouth to offer abuse woops sorry help.

Happy days!

Thing to remember Grumpy, is that all boaters are generally a friendly lot.

Rather than bombing along at a distance from all the raggie boats, it's deemed polite if you pop over and wave at them. Usually they wave back enthusiastically, and bellow greetings at you.

The level of enthusiasm is generally proportional to your speed. The poor things don't generally get above a few knots, and they are very impressed when they see stinkpots doing 40 knots.

The truth

is that most of us here are trying to learn how to improve boating for everyone. The banter is usually tongue-in-mouth , the insults only half-meant. Don't worry about it, just respect others...and learn the Col Regs ( which is more han the raggies know /forums/images/icons/wink.gif /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

the cause is simple , the raggie and stinky experiences are obviously very different. Ever skied with Snowboarders? Shared a rugby pitch/club with soccer palyers? No different...

Re:bit like the bbc you lot

Which lot?
Nice tosspotters, oops, mean stinkpotters
or the evil raggies

Many of us do both, and don't bear a grudge, but there are an awful amount of idiots out there that would wind up the most sainted sailors on the planet.

I cringe everytime I see a stinkpotter blasting past a raggie at close quarters, when it would have made no difference to them to have altered course a little and avoided a close quarter blast past. At the same time you meet raggies who seem to think they own the planet, never mind their little bit of water, especially in channels where you have no where to go.

There you go, same old thing again ;)

Who cares, I'm out on my boat again tomorrow for the first time since June last year after it's major surgery (Jon Bailey taking suicide jockey position) and taking the little beauty home to Lymington from Northney Marine. So if there are any raggies out on the water, please excuse me if I'm being a little playful, it's my first time out on the water in 8 months in my own boat. Don't expect the waters to be too crowded, but I'll want to wave at everyone, just to show how happy I am to be out there.

So if I buzz you tomorrow, politely, wave back, I'm just being happy! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

I only became Grumpy after my experience on Ribnet ! I will not knock them because I am above that, but since my Rib purchase fell through and my wife forced me towards a Cuddy boat, for the sake of our 14mth old daughter, they seem to have got the hump. Don't get me wrong I have made some good friends on there, and still keep in touch, it is the WRVS morning coffee lot talking about the same old nonsense that drives you mad and makes you Grumpy. I could say more but as I said I am above all that, anyway at least you lot have a sense of humour and a life on here, Well done and keep it up.

I wonder if my suspension is over on ribnet now, I may try to log back on there? /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Someone mentioned about hand signals and other signals for interaction between Yachters (is that the word) and powerboaters, I have checked with the RYA, they don't have that book, I will check in Waterstones today, but if anyone has the title and author it would make it easier. I am studying my CEVNI at the moment, but hope to be done in a weeks time, I can then get on with learning these ne signals, is there a test for this?

Cheers,

You can't change your user name. You have to re-register with a new name.

David,

You're quite right. We were on our boat last night in the marina, and it got down to about -3 degrees (good old Eberspacher). This morning, at about 09.00, the chap behind was trying to start his engine, with a great deal of trouble. After about two minutes of grinding, it coughed a few times, and finally started. The whole marina was shrouded with foul smelling diesel smoke as the chap concerned, determined not to let it die, revved the nuts off it.

Was this a damned stinkie? - yes he was, but this stinkie was a raggie (if you see what I mean), whose oldish Westerley was obviously suffering a little.

I'm an ex stinkie turned raggie - seems like we are all capable of such misdemeanours!!

Whole point of this thread was to liven the forum up a bit! Realise that there is no chance in hell of a stinkie stopping firing up in consideration of others.

As it was - have just got back - only one stinkie upwind fired up so got fumed out again, c'est la vie:))

Re: Livening up the forum! ;)

Lets face it the poor stinkie can't win can he.

Fires up his boat, and gets blamed for fumigating all of the lice out of the beards of the raggies downwind.

Or, doesn't fire up, and gets accused of having gin and tonics aboard a floating caravan that never goes anywhere.

Why is it the raggies complain about clouds of smoke from stinkies anyway? The only clouds of smoke I've ever seen have been from poorly maintained raggies, as they are so bothered about buying new sails, they forget or can't afford to have their little diesels serviced.
