before or after the Pump

I need to fit a Hydraulic Oil cooler (Simple Heat exchanger) that user the same raw water that cools the engine.

Currently I have a 1" skin fitting, onto a 1" pipe (approx 1m long) onto a Vetus Strainer, then a 1" pipe ( approx 1/2 m) to the engine. on the other side of the Jabasco pump the water pipe looks about 3/8" and heads off to the heat exchanger via a moulded metal pipe.

I really do not want to break into this moulded pipe on the heat exchanger side of the pump so am wondering if it is feasible for me to add the new oil cooler between the strainer and the pump. So the pump draws the water from the skin, through the strainer, through the oil cooler...

As there is such a big difference between the pipe diameters before and after the pump, I am hoping that your learned folks will tell me that there will not be a problem if I do this.

Advice will be appreciated.

Regards

Wayne

Mine\'s after the Pump

If your oil cooler heat exchanger is between the skin fitting and the pump, should it become clogged you will lose your raw water cooling to the engine and destroy the pump. If it is on the discharge side of the pump there is a lower probability of damage to the pump. Seems safer to me, but then what do I know?
