Looking at a few yachts I came across these Spirit yachts, absolutely breathtaking and without doubt sail like the proverbial witch but could you comfortably live on one for an extended passage? The Spirit 111 seems totally impractical for anything but moderate conditions as far as venturing below or using the galley, the 65 DH seems a little better. I can only really imagine spending most of the time on deck or in the pilot house. I will leave aside the question of propulsion.

Gorgeous boats. Built with love and stunning craftsmanship. I’m happy for others to own them as I’m far too practical a person to put up with the hassle of the maintenance of a wooden boat built to the highest of standards like this, to which you have an obligation to keep to. These boats need skippers and they are not big enough for one - they are much smaller than the numbers indicate. They are all about overhangs and narrow hulls and the big one has no crew quarters anyway.

Owning such a boat and having the means to buy one eradicates the burden of owning / maintaining such a boat, it's handed over to the staff at the marina similar to concierge parking. The owner lets them know when he will be arriving and if he needs anything and lo and behold everything is ship shape and waiting for him when he arrives. All maintenance issues routine and otherwise are discussed and arranged to fit in with the owners schedule of use and the winter storage, all the owner has to do is pick up the tab. For the vast majority of us on here that may be both in terms of the enjoyment / pleasure of ownership and the financial ability to do it totally alien but it's the reality of owning such a vessel.
As for skippers and paid crew neither boat requires them for a variety of reasons:
65DH
It's small enough and well equipped above decks and sailing equipment to be managed and sailed by a typical husband and wife in most conditions. It is also I suspect never envisaged to be used for extended offshore cruising, it will perhaps race in classic events with a large crew which will be accommodated onshore.
S111
Again it was specifically designed not to have a professional crew and if you watched the videos was sailed in moderate conditions by a crew of 5, the owner envisages according to the blurb doing the same with friends and family. Again I doubt it is ever intended to do long offshore passages other than the odd delivery to the Caribbean with a delivery crew. It may well race in classic events but again with a crew that would not live on the boat.
In reality both boats will be used as day sail boats.

And for a day sail boat, a laser is almost as much fun.

Maybe they could be looked after like that when new and not needing much to be done and maybe also if you restrict their movement to areas where you can find high end boat yards you can rely on. In most of the world adequate boatyards are hard to find and anyway these boats deserve a skipper to project manage even the best boat yard’s work, so I don’t agree that they can satisfactorily be managed by an owner-operator.

It’s possible that people who an afford luxuary yachts don’t actually relate to their craft as mere mortals do ,the boat is just another object to be managed amongst more time consuming desicion making and indeed they may well fall into the trap of being one upon theJoneses .Once the initial flurry of newness has passed some might think of selling for something bigger,or just newer

They would go back to the build yard or somewhere like Berthon for annual work and refit, I think you misjudge where such boats are kept when not in use, even in the Caribbean you would find such facilities and certainly the US, UK, Spain, France Mediterranean, Turkey all have world class facilities and craftsmen. You don't leave them in an average marina you schedule and if necessary ship them to where they need to go. The boat yard takes the place of the skipper in terms of managing the boat, never heard of guardinage, I am surprised given some of your other posts that you don't seem to understand or appreciate how the other half lives. ;)

Yes you do see that particularly with the large power super yachts and also to an extent with the short handed million pound sail cruising boats like Discovery and Oyster yachts often only with owners for 2 to 5 years for the med and Caribbean cruise of a lifetime then put up for sale where someone else does the same thing, rinse and repeat.

The guy next to me, varnishing an 8 metre, was the owner. There may be some Spirit, and classic boat owners who are as you lot are fantasising, but others own them for the love, and are perfectly willing to roll their sleeves up. And can be quite good at it too.

There's a world of difference between an 8M and a 21M let alone a 33M yacht and their owners. You are confusing and mixing very different animals.
