Aha!

This and the other posts are a useful contribution James, many thanks.

I had wondered about the test conditions, so this clarifies it. If you have a limited budget & time resource then that is it.

Is it possible to offer conjecture on what performance might be in the conditions not tested using the design information as a starting point, or, is a small change in hull shape to difficult to predict etc..?

The verdict

is tending towards saying it is good value for what it is. I suspect that with all these modern boats, in testing conditions, the owners would give up before the boats would.

I wonder with Bavs, unlike Ben/Jen who do a full range, whether they deliberately don't make performance oriented models so as not to have them 'tested' by the majority.

Accepting that their range is currently built to a price, what would the effect of a more carefully and quality oriented range be on the market?

Can't comment on that particular boat, but have you read any of the Copeland's books? (a couple from Hill Head, now in Vancouver) They did a five year circumnav in a mid eightees Beneteau 38, I spoke to her at a boat show and she was crazy about the boat, they plan to take off again. I thought it very interesting considering the bashing Ben, Bav, Jen on this board.

Predicted performance.

It is quite possible to predict performance in conditions other than those experienced - easier upwards that downwards. Sometimes I do this but I have to be really careful here. If I say performance in stong winds might be poor, the builder really could take me to the cleaners if I don't have factual data to base the 'guess' on - either that or I can prove I am using industry standard meathodology to do it.
This is one of the reasons YW came so badly unstuck in the Walker Wingsail case
